Bipolar? Why Do I Do It?

Hi,

How’s it going for you today?

Hey, before I forget, I wanted to tell you to

be safe tonight you know since it’s New Years

Eve.

Hey yesterday was my birthday and I was working hard on some stuff for everyone.

My friend said, “Dude, why don’t you take your birthday off?”

I have been asked so many times, “Why you, Dave?”

Why are YOU the one who tells us these things?

Because sometimes I bring up some really off the wall stuff, you know?

And sometimes I bring some really scary and shocking stuff.

But I always try to bring you stuff that maybe you never heard of before.

And I always bring you information that I think is important for you to know.

WHY? (like I’m always asked)

Because someone has to.

And nobody else is telling you this stuff.

Not the doctors.

Not the psychiatrists.

Not the therapists.

Not the drug companies.

And definitely not big business.

You know why?

They don’t always care about what happens to you.

But I do, because it’s one of the things that I set out to do when I started my website, dedicated to help people with bipolar disorder and their supporters.

To bring you information that nobody is telling you.

Because I feel you have a right to know.

And I don’t know why nobody else is doing it.

I don’t have an answer for that.

But I do have an answer to that question that I get asked all the time about why me.

Like I just told you, it’s because nobody else is.

And somebody has to.

And I feel really strongly about this.

In my courses/systems below, that’s what I do. I bring up things that nobody else brings up. I bring you information that nobody else is teaching. Things you should know.

It’s not because I necessarily WANT to, it’s because I HAVE to! It’s because you really need to know this stuff.

Nobody told me these things when I was trying to support my mom in the beginning and I began to do my research.

Nobody was talking about it. Nobody was writing about it. (well, in Doctor-speak and in journals, maybe).

But nobody was writing it in a way that regular people like us could understand. That’s why I had to do it.

Because if you have bipolar disorder or are supporting someone who does, you should want to know the information I have to tell you. Like, think back to some of the emails you’ve gotten from me.

Haven’t they been full of information that has helped you?

I know, sometimes I tell funny stories to get my point across, but the point is always informational, isn’t it?

It’s because I think the information is important.

And nobody else is telling you this stuff!

And the bipolar news is always full of up to date information that you need to know that’s going on out there.

Anyway, I hope you know now why I’m doing what I’m doing.

I hope I’ve answered your questions.

But if you have any more, please write to me about them, and I’ll be glad to answer them. FIND OUT WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT ME

The Truth About Bipolar Disorder And Discrimination Revealed

Hi,

How’s it going?

Hey, yesterday I was talking to someone about the truth about bipolar disorder and discrimination.

Did you know that bipolar disorder does not discriminate?

It doesn’t care if you’re black, white, or purple.

It doesn’t care if you’re young, old or in-between.

It doesn’t care if you’re male or female.

It doesn’t care if you’re married or single.

It doesn’t care if you’re blonde, brunette, or redheaded.

It doesn’t care if you’re Catholic, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Traditional Chinese, or whatever spiritual belief you adhere to – or even if you’re agnostic or atheist!

It doesn’t care if you’re rich or poor.

It doesn’t care if you graduated from high school or not, or if you have a thousand college degrees.

It doesn’t care what you wear, what your shoe size is, what your favorite color is, what type of ice cream you like, what type of movies you watch or anything else.

BIPOLAR DISORDER DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE.

If you want to gain stability with bipolar disorder, you have to do the same things I talk about in my courses/systems, whatever you are of the above things I listed.

You still have to take your medications every day.

You still have to see your doctor and therapist when you’re supposed to.

You still have to continue your treatment plan.

You still have to get the right amount of sleep, exercise, and eat a healthy diet.

You still have to be productive, so that you can feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of every day.

You still have to have a strong support system and interact with that support system, making sure they know how you’re feeling and what you’re thinking.

You should still be keeping a mood chart and/or journal so you can keep a record of your moods, thoughts and feelings, so you can notice patterns and avoid bipolar episodes before they happen.

You should still have outside interests so that bipolar disorder doesn’t take over your whole life.

And you should still find pleasure in your life, do things that make you happy, so that  you also have joy in your life.

It’s all these things combined that will bring stability to your life.

Do you agree?

After Christmas Bipolar Days, know this?

Hi,

I hope you had a good Christmas.

Now comes the hard part, though.

Going back to a regular routine.

And having a regular routine is crucial for people with bipolar disorder and their supporters.

It helps them keep their moods more level.

It helps them to organize their days.

It helps them to make sure to take their medication every day, which is absolutely crucial to their stability.

If they keep a To-Do List as part of their routine, that would definitely help them feel more productive.

That’s just one of the things I recommend in my courses/systems for someone with bipolar disorder to do to help themselves.

Because sometimes the excitement and all that of the holidays can bring out the mania in someone with bipolar disorder, it is very important that you help your loved one get back to “normal,” or their daily routine, as soon as possible after the holidays.

Also, they may have been under a lot of stress because of the holidays. There may have been situations they
had to deal with that made them anxious – such as office affairs, family gatherings, or Christmas parties — that were hard for them to deal with.

They might need this time to get back to normal now, to “de-stress.”

The best thing you can do for your loved one now, after the holidays, is to just support them.

Help them get back into a normal routine.

Keep things around the house as much as It was before the holidays as you can.

And understand that it might take a little time for your loved one to make the adjustment back to their pre-holiday self.

Bipolar Disorder Lesson From Candy

Hi,

How’s it going?

Hey, over the last couple of days, I have been to so many places with holiday candy. I actually had some and I was thinking last night about Candy and bipolar disorder which I must admit is kind of odd.

I have heard this saying too:

“Bipolar disorder is like candy – if you don’t manage it right, it can make you really, really sick.”

It sounds almost funny, but it’s true.

You can almost compare the bipolar manic episodes to candy/too much sugar.

You get really, really high, really hyper. You feel great – on top of the world! All your ideas (grandiose ideas) are great ideas – you don’t understand why they’ve never been thought of before.

You have so much energy, you could go on forever – who needs to sleep, anyway?

And money IS like candy – endless supply of it, you go through it until it’s gone, with no thought of how you’re going to feel afterward (or of what the consequences are going to be).

And the fun – oh the fun! What a grand time you’re having!

…until the inevitable crash.

Just like the crash you’d have after eating a lot of candy.

That high does not last forever.

And there are always consequences to pay (sometimes some pretty harsh ones).

That feeling-great-on-top-of-the-world feeling becomes a deep depression. So deep, in fact, that you may even become suicidal (some people have even killed themselves).

Your great ideas are only great to you – to other people they may seem a bit odd, or even crazy. After all that energy is gone, and that lack of sleep catches up to you, you may hit the bed and not emerge for days (or weeks) at a time.

And that spending spree?

The overdrawn checking account…

The credit card debt…

The loss of your car… your home…

The loss of your/your family’s possessions…

The bankruptcy…

The financial ruin…

That’s why in my courses/systems, I teach you how to have systems in place to prevent against all that… because they can devastate you and your family.

SUPPORTING A CHILD/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:
http://www.bipolarparenting.com

HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:
http://www.survivebipolar.net
But worst of all…

Is the loss of trust from your supporter.

Because the consequences of your behavior may extend beyond everything I already listed.

You may not remember what you’ve done during a bipolar episode, but they do.

You may have done or said things that truly hurt your supporter, and they are still smarting from them.

They may be feeling mistrustful, hurt, angry, resentful, embarrassed (because of things you’ve done in public), isolated, lonely… among other negative feelings/ emotions. All because of you.

You might want them to feel sorry for you, and may not understand their distance (after all, they’ve been through a lot, too).

What you need to remember is that bipolar disorder is not only your disorder. Because of you, it’s your supporter’s disorder as well.

They have to deal with the consequences of your behavior when you’ve had an episode.

Answers To Questions On Bipolar & Addiction Info

Hi,

The other day, I sent out a notice about some information I have on helping a loved one who has bipolar disorder and an addiction.

I have a special going on and it ends: Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at 10:00pm EST

You can view it here.

http://www.bipolarcentral.com/bipolaraddictionspecialoffer/

I got a few of the same questions over and over again. I wanted to answer them here:

Question 1. Does you material on addictions cover addictions other than drugs and alcohol?
DO> No it doesn’t.

Question 2. Who is the success story that you interview?
DO> This person didn’t know want to reveal her last name. Please don’t ask. It’s a privacy thing for her. Let’s honor this for her. She was kind enough to actually do the interview.

Question 3. Doesn’t your bipolar supporter courses cover addiction?
DO> No. My mom never had a problem with addictions. The addictions stuff came after the supporter course. This focuses on addictions. The bipolar supporters course don’t cover addictions. That’s it.

Bipolar is Like the Sunday Jumble Puzzle

Hi,

Hope things are going well for you. And I hope

you had a great Christmas if you celebrate it.

I know someone who loves to do those Jumble Puzzles. You know, the ones that are in the Sunday comics?

Where each word is jumbled and you have to unscramble it, then take the circled letters from each word and  put them together in the right order to solve the riddle? People say I’m smart just because I have a degree from Yale, but I think this girl is really, really smart.

She can figure out this Jumble Puzzle sometimes in less than 10 minutes! And I sure can’t do that!

That’s like doing the Sunday Times Puzzle in ink, and those people amaze me, too!

Anyway, I asked this girl how come she’s so good at solving these puzzles and how she can do them so fast.

And she told me it’s because she looks for patterns in the words – like (-ing), (th-), (-er), (-ed), etc.

And that got me thinking…

I know it seems funny how I could relate the Sunday Jumble Puzzle to bipolar disorder, but it was what she said about patterns that made me make the connection.

Now, each person is different, which is why I list out all the signs/symptoms of bipolar disorder, as well as the triggers to episodes in my courses/systems:

HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:
http://www.survivebipolar.net
So, since each person is different, your loved one is not going to have every sign/symptom of bipolar disorder.

BUT…

They are going to have patterns.

There are patterns to the behavior of a person with bipolar disorder.

These patterns are even chartable.

For your loved one, I suggest keeping a daily mood chart. There is a really good one available online at:
www.moodchart.org.

This records their daily mood, number of hours of sleep, whether they feel anxious and/or irritable, and even gives them a space to record their thoughts or any specific events that happened that day that might have affected them.

This way, they (and you) can notice patterns as they emerge, and get help before an episode occurs.

They can even print out the chart and take it to their doctor/psychiatrist.

For you, I suggest doing the same thing in maybe a journal or notebook.

Record the same things as your loved one would record on their mood chart.

Note any things you observe, like behavioral changes, mood swings, anxiety, irritability, change in sleep habits, anything happening in their life that might affect their mood, etc.

Take special care to look for patterns in their behavior (especially negative ones or ones that are out of the ordinary).

For example, if you note that your loved one has only been sleeping for 6 hours a night (the usual is 8-9 hours) and that this has been going on for 4 or 5 nights in a row, that’s a pattern you should be concerned about. Or if you’ve been noting irritability and/or anxiety for 5 or 6 days in a row, that’s another pattern to be concerned about.

Especially if you’ve noting in your “Comments” section that your loved one has been under stress, or that  there have been stressful events happening in their life.

If you do see patterns like these emerge, they could be signs of an episode about to happen, so you need to take them seriously.

First, talk to your loved one about it. They may be noticing the same patterns on their own mood chart.

Encourage them to get help – to talk to their psychiatrist (they may just need a medication adjustment)  and/or their
therapist about it.

If you find your loved one reluctant or unwilling to talk to their psychiatrist or therapist about these patterns, see if you can call for them.

But the worst thing you can do is to do nothing.

Left unchallenged, these patterns will most likely lead to a bipolar episode.

Merry Bipolar Christmas!

Hi,

Hope you’re having a great day!

Christmastime is a great time for many people, but not always for a supporter of a loved one with bipolar disorder.

Sometimes, at this time of year, you seem to have the hardest job of all.

With all the stress of the holidays, some people with bipolar disorder get stressed, and tend to show signs and symptoms of their disorder more often than not, and it’s your job to notice these and to keep your loved one from going into a mini-episode, or even a full-blown episode.

During this time of the year, the hospitals are full of people with bipolar disorder more than at any other time, because all the excitement of the holidays cause them to go into a manic episode (especially because all that spending on Christmas presents may turn into “excessive spending.”)

And excessive spending is one of the symptoms of a manic episode that I talk about it my systems and courses listed below:

SUPPORTING AN ADULT WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?

SUPPORTING A CHILD/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:
http://www.bipolarparenting.com

HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:
http://www.survivebipolar.net

Still, there’s something important I want to remind you today:

Remember to separate your loved one from their disorder, especially on Christmas.

Let today be a good day for the both of you.

Let today be one day full of happiness.

I’m not saying to let their signs/symptoms get out of control.

I’m not saying to let them go into an episode.

I’m not saying to stop being vigilant.

What I am saying is to try to enjoy Christmas.

To remember what this day is all about.

And it’s not about the presents.

It’s not even about the family gatherings.

Because that’s one area where you especially may need to be understanding about. Your loved one may be feeling a little anxious about being around all those people, even if they are just family.

Be compassionate about this, if it is the case. If you do go, try to stay for as short a time as possible to reduce your loved one’s stress and anxiety.

Then spend the rest of the day just the two of you.

Try to stay in the holiday spirit.

And, above all…

Have a very Merry Bipolar Christmas!

Bipolar? Being Positive In Today’s Economy

Hi,

How’s it going?

I have been really sick over the last couple of days. I hope that I get better by Christmas.

I am going to take it easy today but wanted to send out this message.

I hope you’re doing well.

By now, everyone knows we’re in a global recession.

Millions of people have lost their jobs.

Banks are shutting down.

Businesses are closing their doors every day and going out of business.

Gas prices are sky high.

It’s nearly impossible to sell your house in today’s economy.

In fact, that seems to be the #1 thing on people’s minds today – How bad the economy is.

Well, sure, if you think on all the negative things I listed above (and I know it’s hard not to, with it all being in the news all the time staring you right in the face, and some of it happening directly to you).

But you have a choice. You do.

You can choose to be positive in a negative world.

In my courses/systems, I teach about having a positive attitude, no matter what the circumstances are that surround you:

SUPPORTING AN ADULT WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:

SUPPORTING A CHILD/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:
http://www.bipolarparenting.com

HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:
http://www.survivebipolar.net
Now, I’m not saying that you just ignore all these negative things. I know you can’t do that. You still have to be realistic. You still have to deal with high gas costs, etc.

But it’s your ATTITUDE I’m talking about here.

If you have a negative attitude, is it going to keep businesses from closing down?

If you have a negative attitude, is it going to put people to work?

Is a negative attitude going to lower gas prices?

Would your negative attitude help other people be positive in a global recession?

NO.

But your positive attitude might help that unemployed person get through another day. It might encourage them a little bit.

Your positive attitude at least will help your loved one to manage their bipolar disorder, and keep them from having a negative attitude.

A positive attitude in a negative world is not going to change that world, but it might help change the world around you just a little bit.

What do YOU think?
