The Truth About Bipolar Disorder And Discrimination Revealed

Hi,

How’s it going?

Hey, yesterday I was talking to someone about the truth about bipolar disorder and discrimination.

Did you know that bipolar disorder does not discriminate?

It doesn’t care if you’re black, white, or purple.

It doesn’t care if you’re young, old or in-between.

It doesn’t care if you’re male or female.

It doesn’t care if you’re married or single.

It doesn’t care if you’re blonde, brunette, or redheaded.

It doesn’t care if you’re Catholic, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Traditional Chinese, or whatever spiritual belief you adhere to – or even if you’re agnostic or atheist!

It doesn’t care if you’re rich or poor.

It doesn’t care if you graduated from high school or not, or if you have a thousand college degrees.

It doesn’t care what you wear, what your shoe size is, what your favorite color is, what type of ice cream you like, what type of movies you watch or anything else.

BIPOLAR DISORDER DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE.

If you want to gain stability with bipolar disorder, you have to do the same things I talk about in my courses/systems, whatever you are of the above things I listed.

You still have to take your medications every day.

You still have to see your doctor and therapist when you’re supposed to.

You still have to continue your treatment plan.

You still have to get the right amount of sleep, exercise, and eat a healthy diet.

You still have to be productive, so that you can feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of every day.

You still have to have a strong support system and interact with that support system, making sure they know how you’re feeling and what you’re thinking.

You should still be keeping a mood chart and/or journal so you can keep a record of your moods, thoughts and feelings, so you can notice patterns and avoid bipolar episodes before they happen.

You should still have outside interests so that bipolar disorder doesn’t take over your whole life.

And you should still find pleasure in your life, do things that make you happy, so that  you also have joy in your life.

It’s all these things combined that will bring stability to your life.

Do you agree?

  1. I found this article very interesting. It pretty much does have a truth about Bipolar. I was trying to see if I had a pattern that cause my Bipolar fare up . It wasn’t a pattern of time it was just about things that happened in my life that cause it to come out. Trying to correct some of my mistakes that I made when I was in my manic state and not knowing what I was doing. These articles have been helping me now that I am back to normal. What is normal when you have to worry about the next time my bipolar hits?

  2. Dave, I LOVE your emails! Please keep up the good work! I find with many of your topics, that they apply for EVERYONE, not just people affected with BP.
If we all applied what you write about here, we would be happier people. We all need guidelines and a “plan”. We all need to take care of ourselves and love ourselves and tell ourselves all the time that we are worth that time, effort, understanding, acceptance and love.
We need to learn that we control our minds, not the other way around. If there is a problem within us, we need to search it out, confront it and deal with it. If there is a chemical problem that goes along with that-doing the work to understand WHY we feel the way we do-in conjuction with meds will get you where you want to be.
You are so right when you say that therapy is important. The work needs to be continued when you are not in your therapist office!
Some people in the world make life so complicated, it is hard to get down to the basic fact that you choose either love or fear and you live your life accordingly. It is not an easy thing to choose to live your life in love. It takes guts. The people you address have a much harder job doing that and I applaud them every day!!!

  3. Dear Dave:
I am just in the process of determining whether I have bipolar disorder or not. A psychiatrist diagnosed me with it once in an amazing 5 minutes, after I suggested my children thought it was Bipolar Disorder. I took some medication for a week, messed me up, and it was determined by friends around me and my physician that it is not BP.
I have been unable to work, and my physician wants another assessment by a psychiatrist before the forms are completed, as she is not confident in the BP diagnosis I currently have. I will (supposedly) see this psychiatrist in January. But trust me, I do know the difficulties in acquiring the services you require and on a timely basis. I have been trying to “get better” for over 3 years now with every new avenue to try taking approximately 6 months.
Now my three children, all psych major students at university (two have graduated) have stated that they know it is BP (although I have only seen each of them for an hour in the last two & half years) and until I get it diagnosed and treated, they will not speak or see me. I would like to purchase your master set, but what happens if I find out they are wrong and it is not BP? Can I return the whole set or pay for just certain books?
    Regards,
    Susan

  4. In 2000, I took a seminar on bipolar disorder. The psychiatrist who gave it, said that bipolar seems to hit those in the age range of 20-24, often exacerbated by an outside stimuli, if they are likely to have it genetically or by a chemical imbalance in the brain.

As I’ve noticed as time goes on, even CHILDREN have bipolar disorder. This is VERY new to me, and I can’t IMAGINE a child with bipolar. Don’t ALL children have “temper tantrums” and disruptive behavior??!! It’s a brave, new world out there when youngsters are diagnosed with a life-long disorder that requires psychotropic medication. Wouldn’t that stunt their creative outlets?

My “outside influence” was sex, with a capital “S.” Once I started, at 20, I couldn’t stop. I had also acquired my “dream job” in the Senate, and tooooo many GOOD things were happening to me. I also started my delusions, which always contribute to a full-blown manic episode.

I am NOW aware that Bipolar Disorder does NOT discriminate, in ways I never thought possible. In just 8 short years, the diagnosis has extended to younger and younger patients, and that disturbs me. I pray for the supporters of those children, and that their doctors can find the right “cocktail” to “nourish” them, instead of turning them into “zombies.”

As we face the New Year, may we ALL strive to “control” the uncontrollable, through every means possible, including your above-written “treatment plan.” AND – acknowledge that 1-out-of-4 people on this planet, have SOME form of bipolar disorder.

BIG HUGS to all bipolar survivors and those who love us. May God bless you real good. I pray for my country.

  5. David,

Thank you so much for your daily emails, they are such a big help. I am engaged to someone with Bipolar Disorder. You are very correct in your assessment that bipolar does not discriminate. However what astounds me is the discrimination that he faces because he is diagnosed with a mental illness. The treatment he receives from other health care professionals for example. He has gone to doctors with a very real medical condition, only to be told that what he is experiencing is all in his head, or is just part of his mental illness, and not a medical matter. Then after having to get other opinions, and paying additional money not only for second opinions, but also paying for prescriptions he either (A) did not need, or (B) were not correct. You also have the stigmatization that comes when someone finds out that he does have bipolar disorder. Many times we have seen a difference in the treatment that he receives. The reason I find this so astonishing, especially from the health care field, is that these are the people who should be most educated on these types of disorders! Thank you so much once again for your daily emails, I look forward to reading them everyday.

  6. HI DAVID keep up the good work,i am trying to cope with this,im currently with out a doctor and meds for a while my doctor “terminated” me for missing 2 app. in a yr.(i have e- mailed you before) I feel im alone in this “silent killer”, i have NO support, NO one understands me and my actions sometimes. Im just waiting for something bad to happen, i can feel it building up, im trying my best to hold it in, but its taking a toll on my kids and husband. I dont have very many “good days” any more it seems to be more “angry” i have no feelings it seems. I feel im doing more damage to my family day by day and i dont want that, i dont want them to be like me! I saw the same things from my mom when i was young and didnt know why she was so mean, and i always said i do not want to be like her. I can only imagine what my family thinks of me. Anyway thanks for all you do, i am reading your letters more and more now trying to get some under standing, you sent one a while back about bi-polar and the violent person, i wanted my husband to read it , well i dont know where it went? is there anything you can send me so i can let my husband read so he can understand me more and realize how dangerous this can be to myself and others, and how to support me,and how important it is for him to make me (and help me take care of myself) things i need to be forced to do, like medications and getting sleep and excersise? I cant remember things anymore i figure its because i go on anywhere from 3 – 5 hrs. of sleep every night for yrs. maybe this is why? Id have to be forced to sleep, i dont want to or cant? I feel like i need to be checked into a sleep clinic just to rest! I cant remember the last time i slept for 8hrs or in bed for that matter. Im sorry for writing to you like this, ive tried to get a response from you be fore can you please let me know you recieved this at least? god bless
