“Does Bipolar Disorder Really Kill?”

Hi,

The other day I sent out an email about my new guide: “Bipolar Disorder–The REAL Silent Killer”

located at:

http://www.bipolarcentral.com/specialoffer/bipolarsilentkiller/

Like before when I sent this message out, I got one universal question:

“Does Bipolar Disorder Really Kill?”

I people even called me late at night to ask me this question. I would appreciate not calling me to ask questions like this 🙂

Anyway, it’s odd that I have gotten this question because that’s the nature of the entire report and interview that I have.

I sent this message before and wanted to resend it because it addresses this issue.

Here it goes:

“Other people have written me and basically asked why I write about such alarming stuff.

The reason why is, someone has to.

If you notice what I have been doing, I have been telling you things that nobody else either knows to tell or wants to tell.

I have no idea why people don’t reveal this stuff.

When I say people I mean doctors, therapists, drug companies, government people, etc.

It’s amazing to me. Coming from a business background where information is demanded and gotten, in  mental health it’s sadly not. In business if people don’t get important information they go balistic. In mental health it’s like okay to not reveal important information.

You hear, “wow John when into an episode because well his doctor didn’t tell him this that and the other thing. It wasn’t even his fault, if he only knew….”

People say, “wow that’s too bad. Oh well. Better luck next time for John.”

Then it’s accepted. If you read my blog you hear stories of people getting totally bad and wrong information and it’s okay.

OR you hear thousands of people say that I am the first person to tell them this, that and the other thing when what I am telling is the basics in my mind.

The most important concepts and ideas are like hidden in mental health. It’s hard to believe. If you spoke to my mom, she would tell you that the things she learned from me, she never learned after 30 years of having bipolar disorder and like 10 doctors.

I just don’t understand.

I am determined to get important and critical information out to the world even if it’s “shocking” or “alarming”.

Somebody has to do it.”

Bipolar Disorder? Have you asked yourself this?

Hi,

I hope you’re having a good day.

Today I am going to be doing a lot of planning for this up coming year.

With New Year’s just passed, the thought came to me, “Where will I be a year from now?”

Good question, don’t you think?

You know so many people do not think of this question which is very strange to me. I am a huge planner and that’s how I get results.

Anyway, it was a hard question to answer, once I started thinking about it, though.

I started thinking about past years, and the goals I had set for myself, those that I had met and those that I hadn’t met. As well as those I have yet to meet.

In my courses/systems, I stress the importance of setting short-term and long-term goals:

SUPPORTING AN ADULT WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?

http://www.bipolarsupporter.com/report11

SUPPORTING A CHILD/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:
http://www.bipolarparenting.com

HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:
http://www.survivebipolar.net
I think it’s really important to set short-term and long-term goals. But I also think that they have to be realistic.

That’s why I think a lot of people fail to keep their New Year’s resolutions – because they’re not realistic.

So where do you think you’ll be a year from now?

Think about it.

Do you want to be where you are today?

Because if you don’t, you’re going to need to change.

You’re going to need to change some things, and most importantly, you’re going to need to change yourself.

“Don’t fix what isn’t broken,” someone once told me.

Well, that’s not what I’m asking you to do.

If something is working for you, then definitely don’t change that (unless it’s harmful to you).

But if something is harmful to you or your disorder, then it needs to be changed.

For example, take your medication.

If you’ve been having problems with your medication, like if it hasn’t been working as good as it was, then maybe it’s time for a change. Call your doctor and tell him about it.

Or if you’ve been having side effects but you haven’t wanted to bother your doctor about them, or you’ve been too afraid to talk to your doctor about them, you need to change that. Call your doctor and tell him about them.

If you haven’t been getting very much out of your support group, you might want to think about changing support groups.

Keep thinking about where you want to be a year from now. Keep that thought in mind as you consider things.

If your relationship with friends and family hasn’t been the best, then you can change that in the coming year. Do you want it to be different a year from now? Do you want it to be better? Then do something about it now.

Have you been having trouble with your bipolar disorder?

Have you not been sticking to your treatment plan?

Have you been skipping doctor, psychiatrist, and/or therapist visits?

Do you want it to be different at this time next year?

Then start being compliant with your treatment plan now.

For supporters, have you wanted to be a better supporter? Then start now.

For those with bipolar disorder, have you felt like you’ve been taking your supporter for granted? Then change that now. Maybe there are things you promised yourself you would get to that you just haven’t done yet – that you’ve made excuses for, or haven’t made the time for. You can still do them. Just make them a priority so that next year at this time you can say that you did them!

Is there some dream or accomplishment you’ve been putting off? Make this year the year that you finally do it!

You can do anything you want with this year! Just ask yourself:

Where will I be a year from now?

Where WILL you be a year from now?

Bipolar Disorder? Make This Year Better Than Last Year

Hi,

How’s it going?

Well, here we are into another new year, and I hope you’re feeling as hopeful as I am that this year will be even better than last year was.

My friend Violeta who you might remember as the girl who taught me how to eat a lobster about 2 years ago (that was a daily email with a big bipolar lesson), asked me what my New Year’s Resolutions were.

I told her that I didn’t make resolutions but I look at what I need to do to make this year better than last year. I have a system of looking at what I should not do in this year based on what I did last year. I also have things that I am going to do.

Make sense?

and all my businesses. In addition, I am doing this every quarter (every 4 months). This is how I advance my life, this organization. You can do the same for business disorder. For most of us, we’re hoping that the economy will get better this year, that’s for sure.

We’re hoping that a lot of things will improve.

We have a new president going into this new year, and that’s something to be optimistic about, for most of us.

But what I’m talking about is more than that.

Many people didn’t have a good year this
past year.

Many people struggled with their bipolar disorder, and their supporters struggled right along with them.

Or maybe their year was going ok, but the holidays threw them off, and they’re just coming out of that going into the new year.

Either way, the new year offers a new chance. A chance to do things differently.

In my courses/systems, I talk about that if something isn’t working for you, you have to change it, or try something different when you’re managing your bipolar disorder.

SUPPORTING AN ADULT WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?

SUPPORTING A CHILD/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:
http://www.bipolarparenting.com

HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:
http://www.survivebipolar.net
So that’s what I’m talking about here.

For both people with bipolar disorder and their supporters.

If something hasn’t been working, you need to change it or try something different.

Like medication.

If you’re not feeling stable, it could be because of your medication.

Talk to your doctor about it.

It could be that you need a medication adjustment. It could be that you need a medication change.

But whatever, you need to do something.

So talk to your doctor. Don’t just stay unstable, because that is dangerous for you. Or, say, communication.

If you’re having trouble communicating with your loved one, or your loved one with you, you need to do something about it, because you can’t let things stay that way.

It may be as simple as just telling them how you feel and opening up the lines of communication again, or it may not be that simple. You might need to consider family or marriage counseling.

Either way, make that change. Don’t leave something that serious alone in this coming year.

If you’ve found yourself falling into a rut, change it.

Try something new this year.

Pick up a new hobby.

Try volunteering.

Get out of the house more.

Join a support group (if you haven’t already).

Learn more about bipolar disorder.

Learn something new.

If you’ve been isolating, try getting out more.

If you’ve been staying away from friends and family, make a greater effort to stay in touch with them.

Make changes within yourself.

Grow. Change.

This is a new year. A time for growth and change!

Whatever you do, try to make this year even better than last year!

Hey, I am going to the mall and to the movies. I have to take off. What are you going to do differently this year than last year? What are some of your goals?

Happy New Year and Never Forget The Bipolar Mission

Hi,

Hope you’re doing ok.

Happy New Year.

I was thinking of what my plans for the organization is for the new year.

Then I got to thinking about this email I got:

“Dave,
I hope you’re not forgetting the bipolar mission. It’s kind of like in AA. They say their message is to pass along their experience, strength and hope to other suffering alcoholics. Well, don’t you think that should be our message too, only with bipolar? Especially you, Dave.

You have the greatest bipolar mission of all, what with your website and emails and all. You can reach a lot more people thn any of us can. And you should take that seriously. God bless you and your work. Anna.”

Wow. That’s pretty strong.

I guess sometimes I have to be reminded why I do what I do. I’ve been doing it so long, you know?

And sometimes I get so caught up in people complaining, and problems at work, it’s not so easy keeping everything running so smoothly and all…

So yea, I guess sometimes I do forget the bipolar mission, like Anna said.

I’m guilty.

But we can’t ever forget the bipolar mission. It’s way too important.

We have to keep spreading the word that you’re not the only one with bipolar disorder.

Or you’re not the only supporter of a loved one with bipolar disorder.

Because sometimes it can feel that way, can’t it?

And sometimes the feelings that you have about it, well, if you feel like you’re the only one who feels the way you do, if I’m not here to tell you that it’s normal to feel that way, you might wonder about that.

That is part of the bipolar mission. That’s one of the reasons why I started my courses and systems:

SUPPORTING A CHILD/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:
http://www.bipolarparenting.com

HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:

So people would know that they aren’t alone.

Then I started out sending out the daily emails, too.

And I get sooooo many responses, and there are over 2000,000 people who have signed up to my mailing list!

So there are a lot of people who are listening.

There are a lot of people who need to hear what I’m telling them.

And I try my best to be encouraging, because that’s the thing I think you need to hear the most.

There’s enough bad stuff out there. All you have to do is turn on the TV or read the newspaper or listen to the news.

All kinds of bad stuff. You don’t need it from me, too.

I mean, I need to inform you, I do.

But I do want to encourage you, too.

Most of all, I want you to know that you CAN be a good supporter, and that your loved one CAN get better from bipolar disorder.

If I’ve done that, then I’ve done my job.

If I’ve done that, then I have NOT forgotten the bipolar mission.

What about you? Do you think I’m doing a good job?

Bipolar? Why Do I Do It?

Hi,

How’s it going for you today?

Hey, before I forget, I wanted to tell you to

be safe tonight you know since it’s New Years

Eve.

Hey yesterday was my birthday and I was working hard on some stuff for everyone.

My friend said, “Dude, why don’t you take your birthday off?”

I have been asked so many times, “Why you, Dave?”

Why are YOU the one who tells us these things?

Because sometimes I bring up some really off the wall stuff, you know?

And sometimes I bring some really scary and shocking stuff.

But I always try to bring you stuff that maybe you never heard of before.

And I always bring you information that I think is important for you to know.

WHY? (like I’m always asked)

Because someone has to.

And nobody else is telling you this stuff.

Not the doctors.

Not the psychiatrists.

Not the therapists.

Not the drug companies.

And definitely not big business.

You know why?

They don’t always care about what happens to you.

But I do, because it’s one of the things that I set out to do when I started my website, dedicated to help people with bipolar disorder and their supporters.

To bring you information that nobody is telling you.

Because I feel you have a right to know.

And I don’t know why nobody else is doing it.

I don’t have an answer for that.

But I do have an answer to that question that I get asked all the time about why me.

Like I just told you, it’s because nobody else is.

And somebody has to.

And I feel really strongly about this.

In my courses/systems below, that’s what I do. I bring up things that nobody else brings up. I bring you information that nobody else is teaching. Things you should know.

SUPPORTING A CHILD/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?

HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:

It’s not because I necessarily WANT to, it’s because I HAVE to! It’s because you really need to know this stuff.

Nobody told me these things when I was trying to support my mom in the beginning and I began to do my research.

Nobody was talking about it. Nobody was writing about it. (well, in Doctor-speak and in journals, maybe).

But nobody was writing it in a way that regular people like us could understand. That’s why I had to do it.

Because if you have bipolar disorder or are supporting someone who does, you should want to know the information I have to tell you. Like, think back to some of the emails you’ve gotten from me.

Haven’t they been full of information that has helped you?

I know, sometimes I tell funny stories to get my point across, but the point is always informational, isn’t it?

It’s because I think the information is important.

And nobody else is telling you this stuff!

And the bipolar news is always full of up to date information that you need to know that’s going on out there.

Anyway, I hope you know now why I’m doing what I’m doing.

I hope I’ve answered your questions.

But if you have any more, please write to me about them, and I’ll be glad to answer them. FIND OUT WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT ME

The Truth About Bipolar Disorder And Discrimination Revealed

Hi,

How’s it going?

Hey, yesterday I was talking to someone about the truth about bipolar disorder and discrimination.

Did you know that bipolar disorder does not discriminate?

It doesn’t care if you’re black, white, or purple.

It doesn’t care if you’re young, old or in-between.

It doesn’t care if you’re male or female.

It doesn’t care if you’re married or single.

It doesn’t care if you’re blonde, brunette, or redheaded.

It doesn’t care if you’re Catholic, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Traditional Chinese, or whatever spiritual belief you adhere to – or even if you’re agnostic or atheist!

It doesn’t care if you’re rich or poor.

It doesn’t care if you graduated from high school or not, or if you have a thousand college degrees.

It doesn’t care what you wear, what your shoe size is, what your favorite color is, what type of ice cream you like, what type of movies you watch or anything else.

BIPOLAR DISORDER DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE.

If you want to gain stability with bipolar disorder, you have to do the same things I talk about in my courses/systems, whatever you are of the above things I listed.

You still have to take your medications every day.

You still have to see your doctor and therapist when you’re supposed to.

You still have to continue your treatment plan.

You still have to get the right amount of sleep, exercise, and eat a healthy diet.

You still have to be productive, so that you can feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of every day.

You still have to have a strong support system and interact with that support system, making sure they know how you’re feeling and what you’re thinking.

You should still be keeping a mood chart and/or journal so you can keep a record of your moods, thoughts and feelings, so you can notice patterns and avoid bipolar episodes before they happen.

You should still have outside interests so that bipolar disorder doesn’t take over your whole life.

And you should still find pleasure in your life, do things that make you happy, so that  you also have joy in your life.

It’s all these things combined that will bring stability to your life.

Do you agree?

After Christmas Bipolar Days, know this?

Hi,

I hope you had a good Christmas.

Now comes the hard part, though.

Going back to a regular routine.

And having a regular routine is crucial for people with bipolar disorder and their supporters.

It helps them keep their moods more level.

It helps them to organize their days.

It helps them to make sure to take their medication every day, which is absolutely crucial to their stability.

If they keep a To-Do List as part of their routine, that would definitely help them feel more productive.

That’s just one of the things I recommend in my courses/systems for someone with bipolar disorder to do to help themselves.

Because sometimes the excitement and all that of the holidays can bring out the mania in someone with bipolar disorder, it is very important that you help your loved one get back to “normal,” or their daily routine, as soon as possible after the holidays.

Also, they may have been under a lot of stress because of the holidays. There may have been situations they
had to deal with that made them anxious – such as office affairs, family gatherings, or Christmas parties — that were hard for them to deal with.

They might need this time to get back to normal now, to “de-stress.”

The best thing you can do for your loved one now, after the holidays, is to just support them.

Help them get back into a normal routine.

Keep things around the house as much as It was before the holidays as you can.

And understand that it might take a little time for your loved one to make the adjustment back to their pre-holiday self.

Bipolar Disorder Lesson From Candy

Hi,

How’s it going?

Hey, over the last couple of days, I have been to so many places with holiday candy. I actually had some and I was thinking last night about Candy and bipolar disorder which I must admit is kind of odd.

I have heard this saying too:

“Bipolar disorder is like candy – if you don’t manage it right, it can make you really, really sick.”

It sounds almost funny, but it’s true.

You can almost compare the bipolar manic episodes to candy/too much sugar.

You get really, really high, really hyper. You feel great – on top of the world! All your ideas (grandiose ideas) are great ideas – you don’t understand why they’ve never been thought of before.

You have so much energy, you could go on forever – who needs to sleep, anyway?

And money IS like candy – endless supply of it, you go through it until it’s gone, with no thought of how you’re going to feel afterward (or of what the consequences are going to be).

And the fun – oh the fun! What a grand time you’re having!

…until the inevitable crash.

Just like the crash you’d have after eating a lot of candy.

That high does not last forever.

And there are always consequences to pay (sometimes some pretty harsh ones).

That feeling-great-on-top-of-the-world feeling becomes a deep depression. So deep, in fact, that you may even become suicidal (some people have even killed themselves).

Your great ideas are only great to you – to other people they may seem a bit odd, or even crazy. After all that energy is gone, and that lack of sleep catches up to you, you may hit the bed and not emerge for days (or weeks) at a time.

And that spending spree?

The overdrawn checking account…

The credit card debt…

The loss of your car… your home…

The loss of your/your family’s possessions…

The bankruptcy…

The financial ruin…

That’s why in my courses/systems, I teach you how to have systems in place to prevent against all that… because they can devastate you and your family.

But worst of all…

Is the loss of trust from your supporter.

Because the consequences of your behavior may extend beyond everything I already listed.

You may not remember what you’ve done during a bipolar episode, but they do.

You may have done or said things that truly hurt your supporter, and they are still smarting from them.

They may be feeling mistrustful, hurt, angry, resentful, embarrassed (because of things you’ve done in public), isolated, lonely… among other negative feelings/ emotions. All because of you.

You might want them to feel sorry for you, and may not understand their distance (after all, they’ve been through a lot, too).

What you need to remember is that bipolar disorder is not only your disorder. Because of you, it’s your supporter’s disorder as well.

They have to deal with the consequences of your behavior when you’ve had an episode.
