Bipolar Lessons from my friend with the $1500 food plan

Hi,

How’s it going?

You’re going to think I am totally out of my mind today.

I have a really funny story to tell you.

It’s about of course one of my body building friends.

I always tell you these stories because they are really funny. Over the years, I have had so much f.ree entertainment from so many people in so many gyms. Plus, these body building people provide great lessons for bipolar disorder.

Anyway, I was talking to one person that is a body builder. He tells me that his grocery bill is guess how much?

Well you of course now because of the subject line of this email. It’s $1500 a month.

On some days he eats 24 (twenty four) eggs. Imagine that for a second. 24 eggs and that’s just ONE meal. He eats 8 times per day.  It’s crazy.  This person is young. Mid twenties. I looked at him and said, “how the heck do you afford that.”

He says, “dude, I don’t know. I get it done. I make it happen. I do what it takes.”

He then told me how he might have to have 3 or 4 jobs (part time jobs because he can’t work full time. He has to eat and work out too much).

He has very strange jobs that work perfect for him. Things where you can work for only a few hours at a time.

He said if he is ever “short” he sits down and brainstorms ways to make money. He says that many times he has had no money at all and like a miracle something broke lose to help him in his quest to be the best body builder.

What’s this have to do with bipolar disorder? A lot.

First one thing you can learn from a body builder concerning bipolar disorder is there determination for one objective– that’s to be the best body builder, to be the biggest, most “ripped”, etc.

When you think about bipolar disorder, most people who are not successful do not have this determination. Most supporters don’t say, “I am absolutely positive determined to help my loved one become stable and high functioning no matter what it takes.”

Sometimes I can understand why someone with bipolar disorder is not like this. They may be unstable so they can’t think clearly. However the bipolar supporter needs to have this determination.  When I was supporting my mom, I had this determination. I said “I am determined to help my mom become well.” I didn’t know at the time terms like stable or high functioning.

SIDE NOTE-As I type this, my computer keeps trying to restart itself. It’s really making mad 🙂

Anyway, back to my point, when I meet various body builders you hear the determination in their voice.

They are faced with:

massive amounts of eating ( 6 to 8 times a day. Some have to eat in the middle of the night).

Huge costs. There is the cost of food, supplements, gym memberships, etc.

Brutal training. Sometimes they have to work out 2 and 3 times a day. Way more than normal people.

Having to slightly modify their plans. The best of the best get there body fat and are looked at regularly. They have to make slight modifications to their diet, eating, cardio, weight training, rest, sleep, etc to look the best.

If you compare body building to becoming stable with bipolar disorder, there is no comparison. It’s brutal. It’s one of the reasons why I body build NON competitively.

I seriously couldn’t go into competitions. If I do, I could NOT run a business. I could not ever have fun really. No more hanging out with friends. Your life is training and eating. It’s nightmare.

But, those that do it and do it well have lessons to teach those who are not doing it.

One of the biggest lessons is the can do, it can happen, I am going to get it done no matter what attitude.

And if you talk to a person who maybe isn’t that big, maybe doesn’t have the genetics, maybe has lots going against him/her like he/she has very limited money, he/she is convinced that he/she will do well NO MATTER WHAT. He/she has 100% belief that the objective will be accomplished. Period.

When you think of bipolar disorder and you are a supporter, you need this type of 100% belief that ultimately gets you to slowly turn things around for your loved one. Slowly buy surely you start making progress. Then your loved one gets better and better and then eventually your loved one becomes high functioning.

I talk at length of all the systems and tools that you need to make these types of transformations.

Also in the success interviews people tell you exactly how they did it.

When you listen to the interviews in any of my courses/systems you notice that you hear people with horrible stories but who were able to turn it around.

This is not a mistake. I spent a lot of time finding people who had the worst situations that didn’t have it easy, and turned it around.

This is why when people listen to these interviews they feel great afterward. They know they can do it.

To jumpy back to my body building friends. They all think of and cite other body builders that had it was worse than themselves. They watch videos. They talk to people. This his how they motivate themselves.

This is what you need to do as well.

Just remember my friend with a $1500 a month grocery bill, gyms membership bills, a car payment, rent, $1000 a month in supplements, etc. who makes it happen.

And, he like a person who may have bipolar disorder, can NOT work full time.

He makes it happen. He could say that it’s impossible. But he makes it possible.

If you asked me could someone without a full time job, who can only work in a limited fashion afford almost $3000 a month in NON essentials to live, I would say no.

However, people like him are all over the world. They make things happen.

You need this attitude as well.

Know what I mean?

No matter how bad things are going for you, no matter how hard it seems, no matter how many times you have tried and failed, you can do it. Period.

No arguments 🙂

Important update on bipolar blog and important bipolar lesson

Hi,

How’s it going?

Hope you are doing well today. Over the
last couple of days, we had one of the largest
influxes of subscribers ever. Almost 4000 new
people in just two days or so.

Today I wanted to send out a message about
our bipolar blog and what happen.

Just in case you don’t know, I have a blog.

The original mission of the blog was:

“With this blog, I want to keep all of you
updated on important information and share
with you some of my own thoughts about supporting
someone who has bipolar disorder. This blog, and
all the opinions expressed herein, are not
intended to replace the assessment, advice or
treatment of a physician or therapist, and are
not professional advice. If you are looking for
prose written by an English teacher with perfect
grammar, this will not be for you.”

That’s what I wrote about 2 years ago when I first
started the blog.

In the last year, the blog has been focused on
supporting an adult with bipolar disorder, a child/teen
and for those with bipolar disorder.

For about a year, it was doing great. Readership
was really high. People were making comments
regularly.

But then starting towards the end of April 2008
and early May, I noticed something.

There were a FEW hostile people. A few people with
bipolar disorder who were really ill and totally
unstable.

These people were doing the following:

threatening me
attacking me
saying that I stole money from them. For example
one person said I stole her grocery money. Another
person said I broke into their house. Another person
said I stole their tools they just bought from
Lowes.

I spent several days tracking these people down.
I found in ALL cases of where I could actually
talk to someone, the person was OFF their medication.

Then I started getting death threats to my cell
phone and home phone.

People were threatening me to take down all
my sites, to promote “natural remedies” for
bipolar disorder. To stop being the “hand” of
drug companies. To stop attacking those with
bipolar disorder.

99% of this made ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE AT ALL.
None.

It really started to get annoying
and old quickly.

Then I had people who read my blog for a long
time and were friends of mine. Nice people who
were stable who have my phone number. MANY called
saying the blog was getting totally out of control
that bipolar disorder took over and it was insanity.

These people urged me to do something. I then
went to the people who work for me that have
bipolar disorder and asked what they thought I should
do.

The people who work for me said I should keep the blog
up but not allow comments any more until a better system
was created to stop the few people who were posting
crazy things.

So I did that. I had Andrea who works for me stop
all comments on the blog and that was that.

FREE Audio Recording.

You can hear more about this by visiting and listening
to the following podcast.

http://bipolarcentral.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=339971
My goal of the blog was to have a place for f.ree expression.
I didn’t want to moderate the blog because it kind of
limited f.ree speech in my mind.

But someone who has bipolar disorder, actually 10 disorders
that works for me (she is a tremendous asset), set me
straight. She said essentially, “Dave, I admire your
let’s have freedom of speech approach but it doesn’t
make any sense at all. You can’t go into a crowded
building and yell fire. There are limitations to
f.ree speech. You have to setup a better system
and set rules otherwise the worst of bipolar disorder
will run your blog and it will be like the support
groups we all hate. The ones were the sickest most
ill people take over and drive all the good people
away.”

After hearing her, I knew she was right. So
then I worked with a number of people to develop
a new system.

Basically the blog will be moderated. What this
means is that there will be people who have to
approve messages BEFORE they are posted. This
is the only way to do it.

BUT, the only messages that will be blocked will
be:

-death threats to anyone not just me (we had people
threatening to fight one another over issues related
to bipolar disorder)

-hate speech. For example someone saying all people
with mental illnesses would be better off dead (
this was posted before by some unknown person
and removed but it’s a TERRIBLE
thing to say).

-flat out lies that don’t make sense. For example
saying I flew to a different country and broke into
someone’s house and stole there DVD player.

That’s it. You can disagree with me. You attack
me and my beliefs. You can get away with a lot.
But none of the above.

I hope this makes sense to you? Some will be
mad and want it to have no moderation. I don’t
think having these standards are a problem. These
are minimum standards.

You’ll see what I do allow and I am sure you will
be happy.

The important lesson that I wanted to also mention
to you is:

YOU CAN LET A BIPOLAR EPISODE CONTROL EVERYTHING

Read that again.

Bipolar disorder is a sneaky thing. I actually
think of it as a person. It’s goal is to rise up
and create destruction. It works really hard
to do this.

If you are a bipolar supporter, you can never ever
let a bipolar disorder episode take over.

In my courses/systems below:

I talk about how important it is to make
sure this doesn’t happen.

There are all kinds of systems to setup. There’s
lots to do.

If you have bipolar disorder, you MUST work
with a supporter and setup a system that
is in place in case you go into a bipolar
episode. A system that makes sure you
are protected.

When I was speaking to some of the people
that threatened me or said that I broke
into their house, two didn’t even remember
saying anything.

EVERYONE had no friends. No family. No money.
They had lost it all. EVERYONE moved away
from them.

When you think of this blog and what happen,
remember these people.

1. You can’t let a bipolar episode control
the show so to speak.

2. If you have bipolar disorder, stay on
your medication otherwise you will most likely
do and say something really bad. NOTE-For some
of these people if I wanted I could press charges
and get them into a whole lot of trouble with
the law. It’s not legal to make death threats
against someone. Everyone I contacted agreed
to go to the hospital. Note, you can read about
that in my past blog posts where I talk about
how I confronted these people and what they said
exactly and what they agreed to (you can see
old blog posts below).

3. You have to take action. When there is a
problem with bipolar disorder, you MUST
take action right away. You can’t wait weeks,
or months. Action is required right away.
In my case, I let the blog problems which
you could say was the result of almost
a mass mini bipolar episode go on too long.
Shame on me. BUT after a short period of
time I took action to deal with the problem.
I didn’t let it get totally out of control.

4. You have to look back at what happen,
discover why it happen and make a system to
prevent it from happening again. People never
really do this with bipolar disorder. They
never look back. My dad HATED (understatement),
looking back at my mom’s past episodes. He said,
“I don’t live in the past.” That’s not smart thinking.
You look at the past to make a better future.
Today my dad totally agrees. It was all the past
research that I did to figure out patterns with
my mom to predict the future and make better
systems and plans.

Honestly, there’s a lot to learn with bipolar
disorder. Most of it’s in my systems and courses.
You can learn it on your own but it takes a long
time. Other wise you can learn it from me and others.
It’s up to you. I just urge you to learn it either
way no matter how you do.

Hey, I just looked at the clock and I have to
run to the gym.

I think tomorrow is the day that we will be
able to start posting comments again. Andrea
is getting it all ready.

Excited?

Catch you tomorrow. Hope you aren’t mad
at me about the new rules and regulations.
Hey, guess what? If you are, with the new
system you can write about it and have it
posted and that’s okay. Even if it’s
negative about me. That’s okay to post.
Just no violations of the points I listed
above.

Okay, seriously I have to go. Catch you tomorrow.

Your Friend,

Dave

Welcome and Is Bipolar Disorder a Lie?

=>PLEASE FORWARD TO FRIENDS, FAMILY AND LOVED ONES <= Hi, First I wanted to say Welcome to
all our new subscribers. Over the last
24 hours we have gotten up to 2400
NEW subscribers to the bipolar
news and daily.

Okay, let’s jump into today’s topic.

You’re not going to believe this,
but I was actually accused of
being a fraud, because of having
this website for people with
bipolar disorder and their
supporters, because this person
didn’t believe that bipolar disorder
is real.

This person actually said that
bipolar disorder is a LIE!

Now, I don’t know if this has
ever happened to you, but I
was stuck between not wanting
to say anything to even defend
myself because it was obvious
that this guy knew absolutely
nothing and I would be wasting
my breath —

and totally telling him off, which
would also probably have been
wasting my breath, since I don’t
think this guy would have listened
to a word anyway – he was too
sure of himself.

But to believe that bipolar
disorder is a LIE?

Then how come 13 million
people in this country have it?

Now I know our government
Isn’t always forthcoming about
a lot of things, but that is their
statistic! And that’s only the
REPORTED cases! I wonder
how many UNREPORTED
cases there are? I wonder how
many people really have bipolar
disorder?

At any rate, it’s impossible to
believe that the disorder is a lie.

A person who has bipolar
disorder would certainly say that
the disorder is NOT a lie!

And a supporter of a loved one
with bipolar disorder would
definitely not say that the
disorder is a lie!

That’s because you deal with
the disorder day in and day out.

In my courses/systems, I go into
how society looks at bipolar
disorder and that this kind of
thinking is part of the stigma
of the disorder:

SUPPORTING AN ADULT WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:
http://www.bipolarsupporter.com/report11

SUPPORTING A CHILD/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:
http://www.bipolarparenting.com

HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:
http://www.survivebipolar.net

So since I teach about it, you would
think I would be used to it, right?

Wrong!

It still makes me mad that other
people are still so ignorant of the
facts about bipolar disorder.

I have tried so hard to build up
bipolarcentral.com from scratch
and did so much research (taking
9 months off from work) and took
so much time at first to help my mom
and then to help so many other
people with bipolar disorder who
I discovered needed help too, that
I KNOW that bipolar disorder is
real.

Obviously, this man doesn’t have
someone with the disorder, or he
wouldn’t say it’s a lie.

But what do you say to someone
like this?

Years ago, when bipolar disorder
first started being diagnosed, I
know someone who got disability
for bipolar disorder in only 90 days.

Recently, I ran into someone who
didn’t get his disability for 3 years,
because by the time he applied for it,
everyone and their brother was
claiming to have the disorder!

It probably took the second guy
3 years to get his disability because
most likely by then some people
were lying about having the disorder
just to get disability.

The point is, that these people
might be lying, but that doesn’t
mean that bipolar disorder itself
is a lie..

See the difference?

Still, I think this guy is way off
base calling bipolar disorder a lie.

Anyone who lives with it KNOWS
that bipolar disorder is NOT a LIE.

Happy MMD Realize Your Power Over Bipolar

=>PLEASE FORWARD TO FRIENDS, FAMILY AND LOVED ONES <= Hi, Happy Memorial Day if you celebrate it. For our international readers, here is
a quick description of what this day
is:

Memorial Day is a United States Federal
holiday observed on the last Monday of May
(in 2008 on May 26). Formerly known as
Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and
women who perished while in military service to
their country. First enacted to honor Union soldiers
of the American Civil War, after World War I,
Memorial Day was expanded to include casualties
of any war or military

Since today is a day in the US that focuses
on the military, I was thinking about
all the military people I know.

They all believe one thing–they have
power.

Did you know that you have POWER?

You DO!

You have power over your own
thoughts, feelings, and actions!

There is a relationship between your
thinking, the way you feel, and the
actions you take on the way you feel,
and that’s where your power lies. You
have power over your own thoughts
so you have power over the way you
feel and your actions/choices.

We are all constantly thinking. And
it’s worse for someone with bipolar
disorder, because sometimes their
thoughts don’t stop when they go to
bed – they aren’t able to turn off their
brain, and their thoughts just keep on
going.

Thinking is subconscious. It’s like
breathing. Unless you’re aware of it,
you don’t know that you’re doing it.
Because you’re always doing it, it’s
easy to forget.

Unlike breathing, though, with a
person with bipolar disorder, forgetting
that you’re thinking can cause serious
consequences, because not all thinking
is good thinking. Your thoughts can
become distorted and cause all kinds
of bad things to happen.

There are even some types of bipolar
disorder where thinking becomes so
distorted that it leads to hallucinations
and delusions.

Forgetting that you’re thinking can
cause some serious problems in your
life as a supporter, too, such as
unhappiness, inner conflicts, anger,
and stress.

In my courses/systems, I teach about
having control over your thoughts,
which helps you to have control over
your thinking, which in turn helps you
have control over your actions:

Visit:
http://www.survivebipolar.net

Your thoughts are directly related
to your feelings, and your feelings
are directly related to your actions.
In other words, you can’t feel angry
before first having an angry thought.
And you can’t react in anger without
first feeling angry.

The truth is, in order to experience
a feeling, you must first have a
thought that produces that feeling.

Unhappiness doesn’t and can’t exist
on its own. Unhappiness is the
feeling that accompanies negative
thinking about your life. Without
that thinking, the unhappiness
(or stress, anger, etc.) can’t exist.

So you have to change your thoughts,
because you DO have the power
to change them!

“As you are, so your thinking is”
is the old adage. Knowing you
have the power to change your
thoughts, you also have the power
to change your thinking and, so,
your actions.

There is nothing to hold your
negative feeling in place other
than your own thinking. The
next time you’re feeling upset,
take the time to notice your
thinking – I bet it’ll be negative.

Then remind yourself that it’s
your thinking that’s negative, and
NOT your life! You may not be
able to change your life (your
loved one will still have bipolar
disorder), but you CAN change
your thoughts about your life!

You can change your negative
thoughts into positive ones.
This is something you DO have
power over.

You can’t change your loved one’s
thoughts from negative to positive.
This is something you do NOT
have power over.

So stick to something you CAN
control – your own thoughts,
feelings, and actions. Use your
power to change yourself. And
maybe, by a positive example,
your loved one will begin to
change as well.

Dave

Major warning about disability and bipolar disorder

=>PLEASE FORWARD TO FRIENDS, FAMILY AND LOVED ONES <= Hi, What’s going on? Hey, I wanted to send this out last week
but I forget. Sorry. Sometimes I forget
things. Shame on me.

Anyway, I have been doing a lot of thinking
about disability and bipolar disorder. I am
coming out with a new course on how to
get disability. I have many people who
work for me who are on disability so I have
to think about it a lot.

The thing is, there is a MAJOR problem
with disability and bipolar disorder.

I mean major.

Let me tell you what it is: There is a
belief that when you are on disability and
have bipolar disorder you cannot or
should not work.

Okay, first let me say something.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

I am NOT a doctor, therapist, lawyer,
financial advisor and I am NOT and I
repeat NOT offering and medical, legal
or financial advise.

With that said, I am going to tell
you my opinion which comes from having
over 225,000 people sign up to my newsletters,
having worked with more than 30 people who
were on disability, having lots of friends
on disability, and meeting and personally
talking to people from Social Security.

If you’re on disability and have a disorder
like bipolar disorder, and you are stable,
and you don’t work or do something, you
generally get worse.

No one ever says this to people.

I don’t know why but I am going to.

Let’s look at a few things I said. First
I said if you are stable. So the person who
is not stable should not be working.

Second, you have to make sure your doctor
and/or therapist is okay with you working.

Now let’s look at why you or your loved one
with bipolar disorder would get worse.

1. Disability is supplementary income.
You can’t make it on just disability. You
need some other kind of income to deal with
bipolar disorder. It just doesn’t pay enough.

2. The old “idle hands are the workshop of
the devil.” If you are on disability, have
bipolar disorder and don’t have anything to
do or focus on, you wind up getting bored,
and having way to much time. Lots of extra
time on your hands leads to bad things in
general. This is just the way it is.

I know doctors will read this and say that
there are not 22,000 studies to back up what
I just said, but I don’t need studies – I
can see with my own eyes.

With my own mom, when she had nothing to
do for many periods of her life, she got
worse eventually. And she wound up having
more depressions and more manias. There
were many more.

These days my mom works, volunteers, goes
to church regularly and her schedule is
filled and busy. She said to me, “I
don’t have time to have episodes, I am
too busy.”

3. If you are smart, creative and really
intelligent, you need to exercise your
brain. Let’s assume you agree with me
and the person with bipolar disorder is
indeed smarter, more creative, more intelligent.

IF this is the case, if a person just sits
home and does nothing and is on disability
don’t you think that’s going to have a
negative affect on this type of person?

Of course.

The problem is, the social security department
and many doctors even forget to bring this
up. Everyone is so focused on getting people
stable that they forget about the second
part of the equation which is keeping
someone stable.

I have never met someone who has bipolar
disorder and is on disability who is not
doing something regularly–working part
time, volunteering, doing something
productive in society.

Also, let me define work. Work is generally
part time and can be paid or volunteer in
nature.

I am not talking about working 85 hours
a week in a super stressful job trying
to make 82 million a year. Know what I mean?

You’ll hear that the people on disability,
actually work part time or volunteer. You’ll
hear that many bipolar supporters used to be
opposed to their loved one working because
they felt working created stress which triggered
episodes. But you’ll hear those people say
how they learned the hard way that a person
who has bipolar disorder has to do something
productive or they get worse.

The success stories all learned the hard way.
You’re lucky you can tap into their knowledge
and not learn the hard way like they did.

Hey, I just looked at the clock and I have
to run. Does this make sense to you?

I sure hope so.

Dave

A 4 letter word that leads to bipolar success

Hey,

What’s going on?

I was just sitting around and doing some planning.
What kind of planning? Well I was planning my workout
and meals for the next 7 days or so. I do that a lot.
Many of my friends think I am out of my mind
because I do so much planning.

But you know the old saying:

“People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan.”

I was thinking about bipolar disorder as well
and how many things that people don’t plan
for.

And with bipolar disorder you MUST plan.

First let me step back and say one thing
about myself.

The reason why I am so serious about health
and fitness is because I realized about…
hmmm…10 years ago how important it was.

Let me quickly tell you the story so you know
it.

Okay, I was in my last year of football. I played
football for 14 years and a bunch of other
sports. But football was my focus. I was also
a power lifter at the time.

A power lifter is a person that lifts very
heavy weights. Usually in three major
exercises: bench, squat, and dead lift.

I was, I would say, really strong. I could
do 465 pounds on squat for 17 repetitions,
which is really pretty strong (not to brag).

I was also 282 pounds at the time. Some
of my really good friends were over 300 pounds.

We had no problem ever eating really late
at night. Actually it was common for us to
have a double from WAWA (like a convenience
store that sells food). A double is 2 foot
long subs with double cheese, double meat,
double lettuce, double everything with two
large drinks and two bags of potato chips.

We made up the term, but that’s what a double
was. We use to do this about 12:00 at night,
no problem. NO ONE ever thought about whether
it was healthy or not.

Anyway, we all did well in football and
we were in good football lineman shape.
I was NOT low in body fat but could run
really fast – I could sprint and I could
do what a lineman had to do. Could I run
5 miles? No way! I would fall over!

So anyway, all we were into was getting
bigger and stronger. We were what people
call “meatheads.” A meathead is a slang
term for a person who only focuses on
getting big and strong. A meathead is
like a caveman from back in the day.

BIPOLAR DISORDER LESSON COMING….

So here’s what changed me. I remember
it just like it was the other day.
After our last football game, we had
like a get together. Old football players
from back in the day were going to be
coming to school to hang out. Some of
them were really, really good. Like legends.

I never met some but I saw them in films,
on the wall, or in pictures.

I will never forget this.

When they came it was scary. Most of the people
Looked – guess what? HORRIBLE!

They were big and fat. I mean like 350 pounds
fat. Some could barely move. I remember this
one guy that was super good and looked like
a machine in old pictures almost couldn’t
move he was so darn big!

I asked around in a nice way what the heck
happened to these people?

It was like they all caught a strange illness
that made them go from being super athletic
to really big and fat.

My coached laughed, and said, and I will
never forget this:

“That’s how you guys end up.”

I said, “Huh?” and he said, “You guys
get big and fat after you stop playing ball.”

Right then I said to myself, “This will NOT
be me. There is no way I am going to let that
happen to me.”

I felt like I had just gone through a sacred
straight problem–you know when they take
bad kids and bring them to jails and say, “Look
at these people, if you keep being bad, you’ll
be in here as well,” and the kids say, “Oh my God,
I don’t to be in jail, I will be good.”

Anyway, I decided I was going to stop the
power lifting and stop being a “meathead”
and get into super good shape, have abs,
have low body fat, etc.

I just didn’t know how to do it.

What did I need? I needed a clear cut
plan.

I went and like you can imagine because you
Know me pretty well now. I bought every
book on dieting, body building and losing
weight. I tried everything.

The books were not good enough. I could only
get so far.

One day I met a guy who became my mentor.
His name was Ismail. He taught me the real
little secrets to getting the results I
was looking for.

He was REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, smart and
good at what he did.

He is the one who told me that quote, “People
don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan.”

He gave me a plan.

Getting back to bipolar disorder, the problem
with bipolar disorder is 99% of people don’t
have a plan. Supporters don’t have a plan.
Most people just throw caution to the wind
and hope for the best.

I talk about all the different plans you’ll
need to have. I talk about the importance of planning
and most importantly, I give you the plans to
accomplish probably 95% of the goals you’ll
have–no matter what your situation.

Also, even more importantly, you get to learn
from not only me but real people who were really
dealing with bipolar disorder and what plans
they use.

Today take a minute and ask yourself the following
questions:

-do you believe in planning?

-do you have a plan to get to where you want
to go whether you are a bipolar supporter or a
bipolar survivor

-do you have a clear picture of what you’ll
be up against to accomplish your plans

I want to warn you, if you don’t know
the importance of planning and don’t know
what you’ll be up against, how are you
going to actually accomplish anything
with bipolar disorder?

Dave

Bipolar lesson from the man with a 700 pound squat

Hey,

How’s it going?

I have a funny story today. It’s a gym
story.

Someone asked if all I do is go to the
gym. No actually I don’t. But I have
to do 14 cardio sessions now a week
and weight train 5 days a week. Over
the next week I will be spending a ton
of time in the gym because of my goals.

Sometimes during the year, I lower my
body fat really low. My goal is to hit 6
percent by June 1, 2008.

Anyway, I was in the gym. Right now
lots of my friends are training for all
sots of contents. Lots of them are angry
because their diets make them mad all
the time. It’s like they have bipolar
disorder but really don’t.

You can look at someone and the flip
out saying you were saying stuff about
them (LOL).

Good thing I am bigger guy.

So a friend of mine comes in the gym. Let’s
call him Jim.

He’s mad because he says that he is tired
and he has to do a whole lot of cardio.

Another friend of mine, let’s call him Steve,
is working out. Steve has a lot of weight and
is doing squats.

Squats are an exercise that you put a lot of
weight on your back and squat down.

Jim looks at Steve and is mad. He says and
I quote, “That dude’s form sucks. He’s a loser.
I hate looking at him.”

So then Steve eventually comes up to Jim
and starts talking to him. Everyone loves
to talk to Jim because he is really big,
in incredible shape, wins a lot of contests
and is super knowledgeable. You can have
virtually any problem with diet or exercise
and he has the answer. He is like a walking
specialist for men AND women.

So anyway, today he’s especially angry due
to “low carbs.”

Steve is like, “Hey man, how did you get
a 700 pound squat?”

Jim replies, “What??? It wasn’t working
out like you do.”

So then Steve feels dumb and is like, “umm,
can you help me?”

Jim says, “Your form is a disaster, who
the heck taught you how to squat? You should
shoot them. You need to start from scratch
and just do the bar. You probably won’t because
you have no clue and you won’t listen to
me.”

So Steve assures Jim he is a good student
and will listen to anything he says.

NOTE-Can you imagine Jim as a therapist? LOL

So basically Jim says that Steve’s so messed
up he has to start all over with the basics.

He explains what a squat is for. What correct
form is. He makes Steve practice. He tells
Steve to do just the bar which is 45 pounds
for 1 month. Then add 90 pounds for 2 months
and that’s it. He said he would inspect his
form once a week or so.

He said that if Steve didn’t follow his plan
he would never speak to him again or ever
acknowledge that he existed because his time
is “valuable” and Steve was lucky that he was
even speaking to him for more than 10 minutes.

I asked Big Jim about how he got his 700
pound squat. Big Jim is really nice to me.
I think because he wants to start a business
and he knows that I know how to do that. So
he respects me. He says Steve has nothing
to offer the world so he doesn’t really
respect him.

Anyway, 700 pounds is a whole lot of
weight. MY best lift was probably only
about 650 pounds.

So big Jim said his form was no good
and he was doing it all wrong back in the
day. He asked for him from a guy.

The guy was a top guy who screamed at him
and said he was a loser and had to stop
everything and start over from scratch.
(obviously Jim learned how to scream at
people from this guy).

So big Jim’s trainer yelled at him more
and more calling him “stupid” and finally
big Jim listened to him.

He basically went back to “square one”
and started working out with just the bar
which is only 45 pounds.

Then he added 90 more pounds and did that
for many months. Perfectly.

SLOWLY over time he added more weight making
sure his weightlifting form was perfect.

Because his form and his base was so perfect
he was able to have an incredible squat today
by adding more and more over time.

What’s this have to do with bipolar disorder?

Nothing!

Just kidding….There’s a point to my story.

Okay, I saw this blog post:

terry said…
I see your point on medication but what about
the bi-polor who keeps trying medication and has
tried so many different kinds and they(dr.’s)
say give it time and be patient and wind up with
adverse reactions and they say you may be the 1
percent that med. won’t work for you or maybe
work for a short time and quit cause of rapid
cycling bi-polor….Is there hope out there.

(Again,)What are the basics of bipolar disorder?

Get a great doctor

Go and see him/her

Give them as much information as you have

Be upfront and honest

Realize it’s going to take time

Report any side effects or situations with
the medications

If you have bipolar disorder, give you
supporter the ability to communicate with your
doctor so he/she can provide more information

Go find a great therapist.

Give them as much information as you have

Be up front and honest

I talk about all the little things you need
to do besides the list. But the list that I gave
you is the basics. The foundation of success.
Obviously there is more to learn.

But people who find themselves just messed
up in a constant sea of problems aren’t
doing the basics. They have a bad doctor.
A doctor with no clue. They don’t have a bipolar
supporter. They aren’t providing the doctor
with background and ongoing information.

There’s a bunch of people who work for me who
didn’t do the basics and they were messed
up for YEARS and YEARS. When they did
the basics they laid the foundation
for tremendous success.

Ever make this big mistake with bipolar disorder?

Hi,

How’s it going?

I didn’t tell you this but over the
last couple of weeks, there has been this
new diet sweeping one of the gyms I go
to.

IMPORTANT BIPOLAR LESSON COMING

Here’s what happen.

One of the gyms that I work out in has a lot of
body builders in it. Also powerlifters and
strongmen and other kinds of people competing.

One day a guy started talking about how he
was going in an contest and he was trying
a new diet–a diet for sophisticated and
for advanced people.

The diet is a short term diet. It causes
dramatic fat loss but if you don’t get off
it fast enough you can really mess yourself
up.

The diet is actually borderline dangerous.

Anyway, a bunch of regular people that had
no idea about the diet and how to get on
it properly and more importantly how to
get off it, started it.

NOTE-with this type of diet, if you get
off it wrong, you can gain a TON of weight
and it’s really hard to ever lose the
weight you gain. It’s just the nature
of the diet.

Anyway, a bunch of people went on it wrong.
They had no idea what they were doing and
then got off. They got off the diet wrong
and wound up gaining a ton of weight.

Now they are bigger than before.

All because the people wanted this
short cut and didn’t research carefully.

What’s this have to do with bipolar disorder?

A lot. The entire thing got me to thinking
about how people run around and try
things and methods for bipolar disorder
that no one has tested or don’t come from
medical experts.

Or another common thing I see is, people
at meetings or on the internet, hear ONE part of
a person’s treatment plan and they try to do
it without all the other parts. Without talking
to their doctor.

If I had a dollar for every time I saw this
in a support group meeting, I would be rich.

It amazes me how people think there is “one
good bipolar medication.” One kind of treatment
plan.

things like this. How to take it slow
so that you do it right, not fast so
that you do it wrong and then fail.

to you. Know what I mean?

I just looked at the clock and have to run.
