Bipolar lesson from the man with a 700 pound squat

Hey,

How’s it going?

I have a funny story today. It’s a gym
story.

Someone asked if all I do is go to the
gym. No actually I don’t. But I have
to do 14 cardio sessions now a week
and weight train 5 days a week. Over
the next week I will be spending a ton
of time in the gym because of my goals.

Sometimes during the year, I lower my
body fat really low. My goal is to hit 6
percent by June 1, 2008.

Anyway, I was in the gym. Right now
lots of my friends are training for all
sots of contents. Lots of them are angry
because their diets make them mad all
the time. It’s like they have bipolar
disorder but really don’t.

You can look at someone and the flip
out saying you were saying stuff about
them (LOL).

Good thing I am bigger guy.

So a friend of mine comes in the gym. Let’s
call him Jim.

He’s mad because he says that he is tired
and he has to do a whole lot of cardio.

Another friend of mine, let’s call him Steve,
is working out. Steve has a lot of weight and
is doing squats.

Squats are an exercise that you put a lot of
weight on your back and squat down.

Jim looks at Steve and is mad. He says and
I quote, “That dude’s form sucks. He’s a loser.
I hate looking at him.”

So then Steve eventually comes up to Jim
and starts talking to him. Everyone loves
to talk to Jim because he is really big,
in incredible shape, wins a lot of contests
and is super knowledgeable. You can have
virtually any problem with diet or exercise
and he has the answer. He is like a walking
specialist for men AND women.

So anyway, today he’s especially angry due
to “low carbs.”

Steve is like, “Hey man, how did you get
a 700 pound squat?”

Jim replies, “What??? It wasn’t working
out like you do.”

So then Steve feels dumb and is like, “umm,
can you help me?”

Jim says, “Your form is a disaster, who
the heck taught you how to squat? You should
shoot them. You need to start from scratch
and just do the bar. You probably won’t because
you have no clue and you won’t listen to
me.”

So Steve assures Jim he is a good student
and will listen to anything he says.

NOTE-Can you imagine Jim as a therapist? LOL

So basically Jim says that Steve’s so messed
up he has to start all over with the basics.

He explains what a squat is for. What correct
form is. He makes Steve practice. He tells
Steve to do just the bar which is 45 pounds
for 1 month. Then add 90 pounds for 2 months
and that’s it. He said he would inspect his
form once a week or so.

He said that if Steve didn’t follow his plan
he would never speak to him again or ever
acknowledge that he existed because his time
is “valuable” and Steve was lucky that he was
even speaking to him for more than 10 minutes.

I asked Big Jim about how he got his 700
pound squat. Big Jim is really nice to me.
I think because he wants to start a business
and he knows that I know how to do that. So
he respects me. He says Steve has nothing
to offer the world so he doesn’t really
respect him.

Anyway, 700 pounds is a whole lot of
weight. MY best lift was probably only
about 650 pounds.

So big Jim said his form was no good
and he was doing it all wrong back in the
day. He asked for him from a guy.

The guy was a top guy who screamed at him
and said he was a loser and had to stop
everything and start over from scratch.
(obviously Jim learned how to scream at
people from this guy).

So big Jim’s trainer yelled at him more
and more calling him “stupid” and finally
big Jim listened to him.

He basically went back to “square one”
and started working out with just the bar
which is only 45 pounds.

Then he added 90 more pounds and did that
for many months. Perfectly.

SLOWLY over time he added more weight making
sure his weightlifting form was perfect.

Because his form and his base was so perfect
he was able to have an incredible squat today
by adding more and more over time.

What’s this have to do with bipolar disorder?

Nothing!

Just kidding….There’s a point to my story.

Okay, I saw this blog post:

terry said…
I see your point on medication but what about
the bi-polor who keeps trying medication and has
tried so many different kinds and they(dr.’s)
say give it time and be patient and wind up with
adverse reactions and they say you may be the 1
percent that med. won’t work for you or maybe
work for a short time and quit cause of rapid
cycling bi-polor….Is there hope out there.

(Again,)What are the basics of bipolar disorder?

Get a great doctor

Go and see him/her

Give them as much information as you have

Be upfront and honest

Realize it’s going to take time

Report any side effects or situations with
the medications

If you have bipolar disorder, give you
supporter the ability to communicate with your
doctor so he/she can provide more information

Go find a great therapist.

Give them as much information as you have

Be up front and honest

I talk about all the little things you need
to do besides the list. But the list that I gave
you is the basics. The foundation of success.
Obviously there is more to learn.

But people who find themselves just messed
up in a constant sea of problems aren’t
doing the basics. They have a bad doctor.
A doctor with no clue. They don’t have a bipolar
supporter. They aren’t providing the doctor
with background and ongoing information.

There’s a bunch of people who work for me who
didn’t do the basics and they were messed
up for YEARS and YEARS. When they did
the basics they laid the foundation
for tremendous success.

Dave
