Bipolar Disorder is not a DISorder

Hi,

I hope you’re doing well today.

Here’s my latest revelation:

Bipolar disorder is not a DISorder, it’s a problem with disORDER.

I’m always talking about systems, right?

In fact, in my courses/systems below, that’s exactly what I talk about, and the systems needed to manage bipolar disorder:

SUPPORTING AN ADULT WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?

SUPPORTING A CHILD/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?

HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Visit:
http://www.survivebipolar.net
But here’s what I’m talking about:

For example, you have a system for doing your laundry, right? If you didn’t, you’d always be walking around in dirty clothes, and there would be disORDER!

Another thing – you have a system for eating. If you didn’t eat, you’d go hungry, and there would be disORDER.

Your whole body has a bunch of systems that run it:

Your respiratory system, your circulatory system, your endocrine system… just to name a few. And if any of these systems go wrong, there is disORDER in your whole body!

You must have/had a system for disciplining your children or else there would be chaos – there would be disORDER.

And think about work – plenty of systems there. In fact, each department at work probably has its own system. And each system needs to work together, or there’s disORDER.

What about our government? That’s probably the best example of all. We have one big system led by our President that runs the whole country.

But under him you’ve got lots of other systems, like the Congress, the House of Representatives, the Senate, etc., that are all systems of their own.

And even under them are other separate systems like the CIA, FBI… all the way down to your own local law enforcement.

ALL SYSTEMS.

Just think what would happen without these systems. Complete disORDER.

Now…

Think about your loved one with bipolar disorder.

Think about it with this perspective.

If your loved one doesn’t have systems in place, there will be disORDER!

If the government even has systems to keep from having disORDER, shouldn’t your loved one?

  1. Thanks Dear Dave
    I agree with your opinion
In fact myself too try that in case of any system failure/ disorder my self
adopt STAR( * ) technique. Which means
    S- top
    T-hink
    A- nalyse
    R- eview
This has given me best result always in my life.

  2. The name describing it will eventually change, no doubt. But I agree. Just like I agree that bpd doesn’t define who my partner is, it’s a part of her. Manic depression and Bipolar Disorder are clinical terms that allow medical and mental health professionals a basis in which to catagorize symptoms and eventually provide treatment. One of the problems with this is by the time the terms make it to “the street” they come with so much negative conotations, images and judgements that it’s almost best not to even mention the term.

  3. For Dr Rodger Garrick-Steele I left a note on yesterdays blog for you under the Current news. Thanx Hope you can give me any ideas.

    Thanx God Bless Amanda

  4. I used to an RN in an intensive Care Unit, and we cared for alot of Overdose Patients. I don’t believe “mentally ill” people are in full control of their senses, especially when in an episode, whether deep clinical depression or Bipolar Disorder. They are in a different state of mind. Something else is in control. Their nuerotransmittors are all skewed and these are the hormones that control our minds. Serotonin, Dopamine, and Norepinephrine. As well as others but these are the main ones. A severe lack of serotonin can lead to clinical depression. Also norepinephrine. These nuerotransmittors play a great deal in how we view life. So I would say no using your term “mentally Ill” I’m supposing that you mean someone who seems out of control. Mildly depressed people can still function normally. Mildly manic, and mildly Obsessive-Conpulsive people still function well in terms of societal norms. But if a person is completely out of control, well without the norms of society–I don’t believe they have free will, they are lacking the nuerotransmittors that help them function normally.
Thanks for listening to my point of view,
    Teri

  5. Hi Dave,

I agree, it is a dis-array of structure that keeps bipolar from being manageable. With the right systems in place, we can function with-in societies norms, most of us anyway. Some people have different “levels” if you will, of bipolar and are not able to function despite medical treatment, but most of us can and do function well with adequate “crisis systems” in place. That is what I think you mean. Like me not having all my money in my control, not having 90 day supplies of 7 different meds laying around my house. Taking my medication at the same time everyday, every night at the same time. Eating nutritious foods, avoiding caffeine and sugars, exercising, etc. and having these things done in a routine… Writing down my moods until I get familiar with when I feel various ways, and know my limits for dealing with stress. All these are my systems and I remain highly functional, when before I was completely dis-functional.

I suppose you could say it is bipolar chaos when we are in dis-array, and bipolar structured when we are functional. With out routines a person with bipolar will be in chaos. A person with bipolar who is structured in their routines will function better and have a higher quality of life than one in chaos, that is for certain. And I agree with Teri, when our brain chemistry is way out of balance, we don’t really have free will. Our perspective is distorted and with a distorted perspective comes distorted behavior.

    Thanks for you Topic today,
    Bob

  6. David,

I am so tired of being screamed at every day by my Bipolar daughter! Meds don’t work, and her doctor says he has had her on several good meds, but thinks it is our fault, and she doesn’t behave. This is NOT her parents fault! We try so hard, and I am a teacher who works with Special Needs students and tries everything I know! We are changing doctors, but what can I do to cope?
    Help!!!

  7. I dearly appreciate all of your effort to pave the way for understanding the loved ones who have this state. I might of foolishly dismissed my own Daughter’s behavior as just pure meaness and not attempted to find out what was going on with her. Her behavior has been so way out that I knew this was not the lovely girl I raised in my home. She is right there on the list with Job Loss and alienating all the people who try to help her except my Grandson. He is a late bloomer at 26 and still does not get it in terms of understanding what is going on with his Mother.

I would like to REFER ALL THE READERS AND YOU DAVE TO THE WORKS OF DR. AIMEN. HE HAS THE BRAIN FITNESS 2 PROGRAM ON PBS. ACTUALLY THERE ARE TWO BRAIN DOCTORS THAT ARE IN THIS FIELD THE OTHER IS AT UC SAN FRANCISON. HE HAS SOME GREAT PROGRAM TO SHOW OR TEST YOU WITH THE CONDITION OF YOUR BRAIN AND SHOWS YOU HOW TO LUV YOU BRAIN WITH BETTER HABITS AND HE BEGINS WITH SEVERAL NATURAL
    SUPPLEMENTS TO HELP THIS PLAN.
I AM GOING TO CHECK ON THE BOOK SECTION TODAY TO AT LEAST GET DR. AIMENS BOOK. HE HAS A TEST IN THERE THAT HE SAYS WILL PINCH HIT FOR THE BRAIN SCAN TO GIVE YOU IDEA OF HEALTH OF BRAIN.

    BLESS YOU DAVE, SUZ SACRAMENTO

Thank you for your responce Amanda, I have read your inclusion above today, 13th December 08, BUT I have NOT yet received whatever you said in the earlier communication, If you would send it to my Email as listed above, I will attend/help and reply ASAP. Email; robinsonresearch@hotmail.com

    Best Regards, Dr. Rodger. UK.

  9. Is there a support group I can talk to? I am dating a guy with bi-polar and when people find out who I am dating they tell me to stay away from him. I really care about him, but I am also scared. He has been on new meds for 2 years now and is doing fine. I have read where sexual promiscurity is a trait of bi-polar. Do they want many partners or can they be satisfied with one person?

  10. My therapist said it very well when she said – “You are ‘normal’ except when you’re in an episode.” This did a LOT for my self-esteem and confidence that I was doing all right for now. With a LOT of external stressors, I worry that soon I will go hypomanic, but my therapist says I show NO sign of it.

To DEBBIE: Unfortunately, YES, promiscuity IS a symptom of bipolar disorder. Before I settled with my first live-in boyfriend, I believed I could NEVER settle for just ONE man; I would be condemned to trying this one and that one, and never be satisfied.

However, with him, and subsequently, my two husbands (both deceased), I was able to settle with just ONE man with no desire to have multiple partners. It IS possible to have a one-on-one relationship with the one you LOVE.

BIG HUGS to all bipolar survivors and those who love us. May God bless you real good. I pray for my country.

  11. My daughter screams at me every day, too. I would gladly make her leave our home so my husband and son could get some peace. The only reason I don’t make her leave is because of my 4 yr. old grandson. Her son. I take almost total care of him financially and physically. She ran her husband off and is totally out of control. She refuses to medicate and is in a totally manic state. She is 28 and we all walk on egg shells around the house because of her. I am not sure how much longer we can take this abuse from her. It is affecting everyone. What to do?? If she won’t medicate, what are we to do?? I spoke with a counselor today, but I am not sure she realizes how ugly the situation is. Who could possibly understand except those of you who go through it?? We’ve dealt with her for 15 yrs now and I am tired.

  12. I thought your comparison of the government having systems in order as to a bipolar needing systems to be in order was….well….interesting.

First, who said our government is in order? Our country is deep in debt, we have high unemployment with all our jobs going overseas. Foreclosure rates have been the highest. Our stock market is in constant turmoil. We are spending Billions of dollars overseas for a war in a country that has a surplus while people in our own country are having ends meet. Governors are trying to sell senate seats…all kinds of corruption, and that’s only the corruption we know about! Really, who said our government has a system? We’d never be in this position if our government ran smoothly.

A person with mental illness needs a system, but the fields of psychiatry and psychology are as mishandled and corrupt as our own government. Psychiatrists can now decide who they want to prescribe to. Psychologists encourage suicidal thinking. What kind of system is that?

So, what exactly is a ‘system?’ What keeps everything from being in disORDER? Do you really know how to control these things or does it just take place in an ‘ideal world?’

  13. Dear Dave,
I agree bipolar is not a disorder, i was diagnoised with Bipolar two years ago and what my mood swings turned out to be was my mania moods were my fear and my depression moods were inverted anger. Once i learned how to express my self truthfuly and not try to fit in or to control the outcome of any situation or conversation, no matter how scary it is or whether i felt no one will understand, I realised i dont need people to understand, it takes alot of energy to prove or justify yourself to others and some people make you feel like you have to prove or justify your words or actions to them BUT YOU DONT. The secret is to not let anyone take love out of your heart, no matter what they do or say, keep love at all costs, dont let love turn to hate, we are in control of our emotions and it is up to each individual to feel the hurt that someone has placed there not to resist the pain for feeling the pain is less painful than resisting it. Once the pain is felt the solution is clear. Reflect everyday, see what you can learn about yourself and why you are here. For there is a reason why you are here and its up to each person to find that out. We are all spiritual, and the spiritual world is waiting for each soul here to reconise and acknowledge this aspect of their life. The feeling of immortal is correct, for our soul lives for eternity, its being in tune with your heart with this feeling that puts it all into balance. For an aspect of us is mortal as well for the body we are in will die. With this realisation i no longer have mood swings. I owe all this knowledge so far to my spiritual guides, i had a breakdown and met my spiritual guides earlier this year and they have helped in ways i didn’t know was possible and I know now that i was never crazy or mentally ill, I like everyone else, am here on my spiritual journey, I just dont and will never fit the mould. Mould being the majority, remember you are beautiful and perfect just the way you are and as my guides said to me its ok to be different.
    All my love
    Suzanne Renee xx

  14. Hi Dave

I agree with having systems but some systems are not the right systems.

    Have yourself a great day.
