I have a ton of things to do today so I had to get up really early to send this off to you.

I want to thank you for the ongoing information, and I am glad you have the book Everything you wanted to know about Bipolar.or something like that. You said it might be useful to hand to schools, police.. Anyway, here is the scenario.
My ex is furious with me for divorcing him. He is dragging it out hoping to force me into bankruptcy, thereby he could get all the assets. He of course is saying since I have been diagnosed as having bipolar I can not handle money (real story he lied about income, taxes. and gave me and the kids a tiny portion and I paid almost all the bills for the kids, sold all my jewelry and racked up the credit cards to not impact kids lives hoping for fair trial. That hasn’t happened.
He says I am a golddigger and horrible mother (reverse is true) and since I have bipolar nothing i say is true. Judges believe him. A Nanny has waved arms around at school and called cops on me when I exercised my first right of refusal. Police took her word for everything (real story it is much cheaper for my ex to hire a lying nanny who is anxious to live in my house than to settle with me).
Bottomline, I’m glad I had your booklet. I took it to the police supervisor today. I told him it is critical to write accurately about someone, wouldn’t he want me to do the same?
I handed him the booklet and told him I have been diagnosed and I am highfunctioning and hyperthymic. He may not rewrite the report but he will educate the officers about bipolar and how they need to treat people fairly. I am not sure about the outcome of the rest. We are 4 years into it. I want my kids.
I did realize that due to my situation what is really critical is education about bipolar and other mental illnesses for those who do not have funds, or are cheated out of legal funds, they should have them. What you are doing is very important, Dave. Thank you.

So here’s the secret you must do:
You MUST educate people and be proactive.
You need to be like Diane, and take an example from what she did.
Like what she did, taking my booklet to the police supervisor.
It may not guarantee that he’ll do something to help her situation, but at least she was proactive – she did something, she didn’t just wait around doing nothing and expecting her situation to change – and at least she educated him, and he’ll educate others.
Then maybe the next time he (and others) come against someone like Diane and her situation, he’ll handle things differently.
You need to educate people. It’s the only way to make things change for you and others who have bipolar disorder and their supporters.
It also might make it easier to let me do the educating, like with my booklets and other information (using it to do the talking for you, like Diane did).
When I started my website and writing my courses and materials, it was with the purpose of educating people about bipolar disorder.

I know first hand how Diane feels. It happen the same to me. My ex got the boys from me by saying I did this or that. One real damageing information he told the court was that I pulled a gun on my boys when in fact the gun was given to him like three months before, which he failed to let anyone know that. I did not wish to have the gun so I gave it to him for the dinning room set. The court never ask me anything about this, just took his word because I am bipolar.

I agree with your email, education is critical. Without knowledge people perish. Education is way behind as far as the general public understanding bipolar. I tell some people and they are like “What’s That?” They don’t even know WHAT it is, let alone that it is treatable. Thank you for your efforts at educating the public about bipolar Dave…

i have 2 sons, both in their 30’s- who have dual diagnosis- bipolar 2/drug/alcohol issues- i also have a masters in counseling- and extensive education and experience working with diagnosed individuals ( doing psycoeducation) and my sons have refused to accept the diagnosis, and resent every piece of information that they have been given- they have both been on their own for at least 10 years- manage to be very functional at times, but continue to destroy relationships, make impulsive decisions, stop drinking and then relapse etc.etc.etc.- education only works if you want to learn- but i am convinced that if they were on medication they would not be so angry and Know it all, and could then have the benefita of education! FRUSTRATED

I dont write often , but the story with Diane got to me .
To start, my wife was diagnosed with Bipolar in 1978 after giving birth to the 4th child , to make A long story short , yes I had some tough times dealing with the disorder , BUT however I never had the tought to leave her.
Anybody at anytime can break out with some sort of medical disorder , no one has A guarentee to go trough life without any health problems.
So here is my point , instead of helping the person that Motherd your children , they go on to distroy them .
Were is hummen fillings ?, were is responsbilty ???dont you have any dignity ?
So Dave , I think you have one more job to do , and that would be to step up to the Court systeem of our great U S A and explain to them how to handle A divorce case with A bipolar problem.
And to you Diane , do not give up ! You sound like A very good person doing the right thing’s , at the end of it all you will be the winner.

The Woman you talked about it right on! Ignorance is a persons right but not our peace officers or judges! He husband is a fool to think he would win with his lies! Truth always comes out! My prayers and best wishes goes out to her in her fight to keep her kids! My husband is very supportive to me and Im supportive to my daughter who also has bipolar! Ive been educating her on her challenge with this thing we both have! After 13+ years of no meds I stepped up and asked my family doc to give me what my daughter is on! I figured I need to set the example that she needs the meds so I went against my gut and asked for what she is on knowing that I wont have the bad reactions that I have had in the past with some of the other meds .. Thank god we are alike in our reactions to meds so I watched her reaction found none so I jumped on hers! My husband likes me when Im manic cause he gets what he wants but once Im stable on the meds I guess Ill have to do what many women do “fake it”!

Thank u 4 the words that u gave to me. It helped right now he is in a hospital and got put in when he went to new york city he has no idea how he got there. I havent heard from him yet nor do I think i will. his mom is taking things into her hands and its a big load off me with the babys still in the hospitl i do hope he gets the help he need but I have made my decision that it is over with me and him I cant take the pressure and trying to raise the babys . I am going to move because he is comming back to where i llive yet he has no idea where i live just my phone number I do and will always love him yet its time for him to stand up and do what is right and live his life. “Knowledge is Power!” DOWN with the old “stigma-thing,” let’s get our law enforcement and legal personnel an education in “mental illness,” and how even our supporters lie about our conditions in their own quest for “justice.” I don’t think Diane should lose her children; her husband sounds like a real jerk (I could have used another word, but it wouldn’t get posted ;).
Unfortunately, too often, misconceptions about bipolar and other mental illnesses prevail in the legal system. Perhaps it’s the cops’ fault that they believe the “man” in a situation, before they will listen to the woman’s point of view – another form of discrimination.
One thing a bipolar survivor can do in such a case, is write down EVERYTHING that the supporter accuses them of, when the accusations started, the frame of mind the survivor is in, and how it impacts the situation. Maybe, while the survivor has “rights,” something in writing can improve the odds that she will get her fair hearing.
Right now, “bipolar disorder” is the “designer diagnosis,” in that there are even ads on TV about Abilify and Cymbalta! People are starting to learn more about their own condition, and how to recognize and treat it. There’s nothing like “real life” to make people aware that not ALL bipolar survivors are “crazy.”

I used to control my “mood” by only taking meds when I could feel a rise or fall, I could hold any level.
it only thinking , that keept me awake at Night, so I got some Meditation CD’s of my “hippi” Nurse, it is known Meditation can switch off thoughts.
It works wonders, and their is not even the least “Mind fog” next Day. Fish Oil 2-5000mg per Day also. Best to get the Vanilla flavered ones, or your Bits will smell like Fish.
Now I shall go Surfing.
Dave, Thank you for this e-mail. It helps to know that you are willing for us to educate others on Bipolar Disorder.
My husband and I went to a conference for the mentally ill at our State Capital. We found out that our state legislature wanted to cut out 60 million dollars on mental health. Plus other things that would hurt bipolar and other mental patients. Why?? Because they wanted to cut down on spending for education and nonmedical expensies for the mentally ill. And we had 300 people at that conference. And we also were told that we about 10% of the State who have been diagnosed with Mental Issues. And they want to privatize the mental hospitals. They want to have only 3 State mental hospitals. My husband who has influence in the Legislature and State Government went to that meetng and has sent letters to our Legislature and the Lt. Governor and the Governor of our State. Our State Representative came over to our table and knew who my husband was and had called us the day before asking my husband if he had any issues he wanted passed by the Legislature. We haven’t found out yet what happened to that bill in the Legislature. I will let you know what happened when we find out.
Now remember I am the one with Bipolar Disorder; and he is my supporter. And we both are learning from you more about Bipolar. Now I am a diabetic and have bipolar disorder and I do not drink alcohol. But today he told me that I sounded drunk. I wasn’t feeling high, but I sounded that way on the phone. My blood sugar was up. (In the past he told one of our best friends that I was drunk the night before when I drank alot of eggnog.) Thanks again, MaryLou
David thank you so much for all the information I have received from your daily e-mail. You have been a great help. I have included your e-mail address for many in the family. Whether they read the e-mail or not. I am hoping to enlighten them and give them a chance to understand the needs of a person with bipolar disorder as well as the importance of medication and treatment. I am the supporter of a 9 year old with bipolar disorder. I am soon to be 60 years old and in poor physical health. I pray that one of the people in the family will be willing to learn and be a supporter for her if I am no more. You have given me hope and something to help them learn how to do what is necessary for the on-going treatment and well being of this child. Thank you for your many gifts of knowledge.
