  1. Some of Sigmund Freud’s theories of human motivation have been called psychological hedonism; his “life instinct” is essentially the observation that people will pursue pleasure. However, he introduces extra complexities with various other mechanisms, such as the “death instinct”. The death instinct, Thanatos, can be equated to the desire for silence and peace, for calm and darkness, which causes them another form of happiness. It is also a death instinct, thus it can also be the desire for death. The fact that he leaves out the instinct to survive as a primary motivator, and that his hypotheses are notoriously invalidated by objective testing, casts doubt on this theory.

  2. I saw this quote and related to it. The opposite of ‘pleasure’ is ‘pain.’ I now understand why I have suicidal thoughts and why I want to end my life. I was told by my psychologist that I am ahedonistic; that I don’t seek pleasure. I have a life of darkness and sadness.

  3. Far too many ‘mental health professionals’ have let me down. I have honestly tried to find someone caring. But, they are only after the dollar. I give up. It is hopeless. I am done. On Thanksgiving Day, God willing, I will finally be at peace.

  4. Not sure if I believe the article about bipolar smokers are more likely to commit suicide than non-smokers. Many people smoke more when they are stressed and maybe smokers are more easily stressed. It could have something to do with that. My boyfriend has recently stopped drinking after a health warning from his doctor. Since then he smokes even more than he did before, but he is not having suicidal thoughts (thank God).

It is good to hear of George Denslow using his bipolar in a positive way without meds. I have heard of this method to work for people with mild versions of bipolar like cyclothimia, but doubt it would be good for bipolar 1 and 2. e.g. George Denslow says he is very happy to be bipolar and does not wish to lose the gift. My boyfriend said exactly that when he was hypomanic and stopped taking his meds. Then he went into a full manic episode, didn’t sleep for days, got deluded, then angry. By that time he was no longer creative and productive, instead paranoid and behaved like he was possessed by a demon. He was in an awful lot of emotional pain and turmoil when he was hospitalised for his own safety. I’m sure if George Denslow had experienced that pain he would not say that being bipolar was such fun. Hypomania can probably be fun, but it’s not worth sacrificing your health for in the long term.
