Your Friend,

Dave

  1. David, Being a bp myself, with high anixity it scares me to read the risks of suicide i might have to encounter. I guess i also have to remimber that i have my own free will as well. Hopefully thats whats going to count in my life.

  2. I HAVE BEEN BIPOLAR FOR 40 YEARS. I HAD WHAT WAS ORIGINALLY CALLED MANIC DEPRESSION. IT FIRST REARED ITS UGLY HEAD WHILE I WAS IN THE ARMY. I CAN NOT TELL YOU HOW ABUSED I WAS WHILE I WAS AT MY FIRST DUTY STATION IN NORTH CAROLINA. FORTUNATELY A SOLDIER IN MY PLATOON KNEW WHAT WAS WRONG WITH ME. I SPENT 30 DAYS IN A ARMY HOSPITAL UNTIL I WAS FIT ONCE AGAIN FOR DUTY. I WAS SENT TO VIRGINIA AND WAS BIPOLAR DISORDER FREE FOR 6 MONTHS. I RECIEVED NO MEDICATIONS AND WAS PUT IN SCHOOL. ON JAN. 24TH I WAS ORDERED TO VIET NAM. WHILE IN COUNTRY I SUFFERED 2 BIPOLAR EPISODES THAT HAD ME BROKEN IN RANK FROM AN E-5 TO E-3. I WAS TRANSFERED OUT OF MY COMPANY AND THEN AGAIN TRANSFERED YET AGAIN. THIS WAS DONE BECAUSE OF MY BIPOLAR DISORDER. WHY DIDN’T THEY JUST DISCHARGE ME RIGHT FROM THE BEGINNING? I ENLISTED AT 18 YEARS OLD AND I KEPT TELLING WHOEVER WOULD LISTEN THAT I WANTED TO SERVE MY ENLISTMENT.I WAS FINALLY HONORABLE DISCHARGED IN 1971. IT WAS HARD BUT DID NOT BEGIN TO EQUAL THE DISCRIMINATION I FELT AT HOME. JAMES

  3. I was disappointed by the articles regarding success stories since it was just an announcement of when they were holding their meeting to share success stories.

  4. Along with the negative news of murders and suicides, there comes the article by Nancy Foster, who realized that “coming out” as a bipolar survivor was one positive thing that came from her illness.

I applaud all the actors, actresses, and other famous/infamous people who have the courage to talk about the “highs” as well as the “lows” of this illness. Perhaps with more exposure from “normal” people, the stigma of mental illness, and bipolar disorder in particular, will fade, as did the stigma of cancer at the turn of the last century. More power to those who speak out!

BIG HUGS to all bipolar survivors and those who love them. My prayers are with you.

  5. Thanks, Dave, for your current Bi-Polar news, especially the article by Nancy Foster (L.B. mayor’s wife). Our son is 34 years old and has Bi-Polar, borderline personality disorder and ADD. He is on medication and takes it faithfully. However, he is currently in bed with severe depression. He will not see a therapist and never has, because he really has not accepted his diagnosis’s. He says he takes his medication for us, because he knows how he can be without it. We are retired and getting up in years and each bout of mania or depression is starting to take it’s toll on us. We can see that he is better on his medication, but still the depression comes. We have been trying for six years to get help financially (SSI,) however his medications are payed for, but because of severe weight gain from both Zyprexa and lack of exercise we now fear he may become a diabetic with more financial load on us. I’m not asking you for a solution, but just sharing our story. Our son does do little odd jobs from time to time, but because of his weight and anxiety is limited in this. Nancy Foster’s article was a bright spot in my day today, because she is encouraging and I feel like there could be a bright spot ahead. Keep up the good work, Dave. I read all your articles faithfully every day.

    Dear Friends,
This is a show that aired this week in Long Beach about my dealing with bipolar disorder.
Art Levine and I thought it would be appropriate following my story in the Press Telegram.
    http://www.presstelegram.com/news/ci_7551478

Also, be patient letting it load and after it loads it takes a few seconds to start.
If it should stop during the show hit the space bar. Hope it works…it was my first time doing something like this and was kind of fun.
I am pleased that sharing has brought comfort to some people.

    Here’s to your mental health!

    Nancy
