  1. Hey man, you’re a star. I can understand your pridicament with the idiots you encounter so very often. I can’t begin to imagine the busy life you must lead. To be honest, even if you were the most fabulous ‘boss’ in history, I wouldn’t work for you, or for anyone else for that matter. I had one massive episode while studying hairdressing. I didn’t finish the course, I was seriously hurting myself, physically and mentally. I’m dead afraid of having to face a horde of people every day again. Last time went pretty well even though I worked for the mother from HELL… I feel horrified when I think about it. I have a huge problem with dystonia which alters my voice to sounds I can never accept. I hate that, and I would rather live my life away from everyone. I really hate people. I hate how they make me feel. Even though they had nothing to do with it…fuck them. (You’re ok, ) The ever present ‘Excuse me?’ GHOD I FUCKEN HATE IT!!! Anyway, point is, I know I must get back to work, but I’m scared. Of another episode. I oh so nearly killed myself with my young tod also in the house. Crazy shit. How do I know when I’m ready to go back to work? As I said last time was a total nightmare, but the time before that kept me happy for seven or eight years. My memory is not too good, which really interferes with my duties. I know I’m rambling, but you can stop reading at any time because I don’t expect an answer anyway. It would be grand though to receive a mail from you to me personally. Do you think I’ll ever be able to do it again and be happy again? I’m a people’s person. I used to love interaction with all people. I loved the human race. Just since the last attempt I just changed. A lot. I’m not really a person anymore. DAYS go by that no-one calls me. Sometimes WEEKS go by when just my mother from HELL and hubby calls. The person who I became is really worthless. She’s no good in all respects. I’ll stop now, hey, sorry for your time. Regards.

  2. Dave, i don’t have a comment about the news, but i do have one about you personally. you are really an awesome gentleman to spend so much time helping people with bipolar disorder. i read your emails daily and they are an immense help for me. my partner and i both have bipolar disorder. at this time we can’t afford your courses, but i am hoping this changes soon.

i have no insurance, so i go through one of those prescription assistance programs you see on TV. i never could afford my abilify without them, though i do encounter many problems: the prescription company always drops the ball when it comes time for a refill, leaving me to jump back and forth between my abilify and lithium when they haven’t sent my abilify refill. my doctor hates this and is extremely worried about my toxicity levels at this point.

my main roadblock to obtaining insurance is my bipolar diagnosis. insurance companies here that and they can’t run away fast enough. any suggestions? thank you for your generous time and patience with us all.

  3. As for light and Bipolar, I have known from experience that I do not do well with sunlight. My son found a floor lamp with a daylight bulb that I use daily. It isn’t perfect but it helps.

Shame on Brittney’s parent’s and shame on Dr. Phil. Everything does not have to be about making a buck. The parent’s aren’t doing right by either of their daughters.

Just my opinions and others are free to theirs.

  4. Dear David,
I am glad to get every time your news and I think that your system it is one of the most workfull for many people who are working and handling with people under BPD or some nears DO.
Also my question will be today what do you think about the early correction from young people who ar not able to follow the rulles and are not diagnostiged under mental illness but they are not at the right social way.
In Europe the subject takes part of the politics because the criminality it is every day biger and the low are very soft.
Do you think that prevention can keep mental health or do you think that prevention is only an illusion.
I dont know why I am asking you because I am teacher as you know and I think that the only way to keep our world in safe it is firts with education an second with control.
    In agree or not ???

  5. To Natasha:

I’m not David, but I am someone who has gone through, and am still going through the same kinds of things. My son will be nineteen at the end of this month. When he was 10 I went into a major episode. I lost my husband. (Actually he flaked out on me and left.) I was a teacher. I couldn’t teach anymore. I was put on so much medication adn it took some time to find a good psychiatrist and a good counselor. I can’t remember a lot of my son’s childhood from 10 to 17. Sometimes I still get overwhelmed and I miss my old life. The life where I had lots of friends. The life where my house was the gathering place for adults and kids alike. The life when I was a special education teacher, scout leader, neighborhood cook, tutor, child expert. I miss those days and sometimes I think I will never be that happy again.

Trust this: If you work hard and get the help you need, it can get better. I am going to be happy again. I will never get back the time I lost, but I know my future is bright. I have to believe that. I have to work hard to keep BiPolar in check. But I won’t let it beat me. I have a grandson to spoil, and more grandkids to come! I hope!;-)

    Keep the faith.

  6. Dear Dave:

I and my mother have bipolar disorder, and I have a 22 year old
grandson whom I believe is also a
victim. He is constantly in and out of jail on midemeanors for out
bursts with his girlfriend. He has
been confined at least 5 times but
    never evaluated for the disorder.
His mother refuses to accept that
this may be a strong possibility
and doesn’t want him “labeled”. Well now he is being labeled as
a criminal, which is worse & he keeps going in and out of jail.

I don’t know what to do.

Also, I am taking chantix, and
am aware that chantix is listed in
a class action lawsuit as the cause of suicide in a number of
    death cases. Should bipolar people
    be taking chantix? My psychiatrist
    doesn’t even know–i’d love the
feedback of others who have taken
    chantix.

    Thanks,
    JoAnn

  7. Hi Dave,

About our least-favorite starlet, I think she needs someone, but not that quack Dr. Phil. I can’t imagine how much harm it would do me to have my therapist go on television and start talking about me and my problems.

  8. I am a mother of three and I suspect my husband is bipolar. Why do I suspect? In the ten years we have been married he has had 10 jobs, half of which he was fired from. The other half he was unhappy and didn’t like what he was doing. During his episodes he is extreemly unhappy and goes out with friends and doesn’t return for a day or two. He drinks heavily sometimes then suddenly doesn’t have the desire. He tels me he doesn’t have fun with me anymore because I have no friends and nobody likes me. He gets text messages from other women, and he takes out of the blue walks alone from time to time. He has maxed out his credit card, but there is very little in this home that he has to show for it. These episodes last for months, but during the episodes he gets drunk and cries alot. By the next morning he is high on his horse again and ignoring me as if I had done something wrong. I have done wrong, I have read his emails and text messages. It drives me crazy knowing that he is focusing on someone else. After all this subsides, he is back to a normal guy that just wants a family and wife. Bipolar or Cheater?

  9. i asked many times for u to send me latest on schizophrenia. want to start web site, write book, need help , want grant. thanx

  10. Is Light Therapy Good For Bipolar??? Not everyone agrees, David.
See article at http://www.brightenyourlife.info/ch7.html where it clearly states that BRIGHT LIGHT can trigger mania.
To quote, “Manias triggered by bright light can be serious, and perhaps constitute the most important risk of bright light treatment.” (Source: Daniel F. Kripke, M.D, Chapter 7, “BRIGHTEN YOUR LIFE”. 2002)

  11. Dear Dave,
My husband & I have decided to help his daughter (who has bipolar) by taking out a loan and pay the interest only type of deal. This means that we may never get to paying the mortgage unless we have a great windfall of cash which is highly unlikely as I am the only one working (I am the step-other). The only way I would agree to this is if we go through a real estate agent because the last time we had his daughter in a house, she changed the rent behind our backs and we did not know about it until we received our bank statement and by then she moved out.

Am I right in stipulating such an arrangement as it is the bipolar that I do not trust. My stepdaughter mostly lives in a delusional world and believes that we are very wealthy family and that she is entitled to some comforts but at our cost. We provide her with a small allowance each month to top up her sickness benefits but she and her partner (who also has a mental illness) seems to buy takeaways 3x daily (which we only found out this weekend). They do not cook, clean or do much around the house, which she shares with her mother (who has only recently come back into the family as she left when the children were very young).

I just hope we are doing the right thing for stepdaughter’s security as I do believe that she needs help but with this bipolar, everything can be fine one day and terrible the next.

Unfortunately, we cannot afford houses in the area she wants to live in (the expensive ‘leafy green’ areas that are not considered ‘suburbs’) and we keep telling ourselves that we must try something.

Any ideas or suggestions from those worried parents who have experience at this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for your time, Lesley.

  12. Natasha, you should go a bit easy on yourself. You are not worthless and do let anybody tell you that you are. Every one of us is special. Perhaps you might want to take a look at yourself in a more positive light and focus on what you can do for you. How about writing down three headings in a ven diagram – Body, Mind and Spirit. Then list one or two things you could do that is going to feed your body, two for your mind, and two for your spirit (soul) and then do them. It could be reading (the bible, meditation verses etc), walking, having a coffee in a very nice place (once a month if not weekly) to make yourself feel good about yourself. Everybody is special and there are no worthless people here.

Keeping an even keel on your body, mind and spirit along with appropriate treatment may have long term benefits for your.

If you need to work and cannot face people, why not set up a little business from home (as you obviously have a computer) and work the hours that are suitable to you. Perhaps Dave has some good ideas – how about tying of documents and sending to the clients via email?

Just a thought and I do hope you get on the road to healing soon.

    God bless and take care,
    Lesley

  13. Further to my earlier note about the risk of causing mania by the use of light therapy, see http://www.mentalhealth.com/dis1/p21-md05.html#HypEp where it states, “Hypomanic-like episodes that are clearly caused by somatic antidepressant treatment (e.g., medication, electroconvulsive therapy, light therapy)” (Source: Internet Mental Health (www.mentalhealth.com) copyright © 1995-2005 by Phillip W. Long, M.D.)
” Light therapy may trigger episodes of mania in people with bipolar disorder.” (Source: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/seasonal-affective-disorder/MH00023. © 1998-2008 Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research. )
    BUT…
“Light Therapy Treatment for Bipolar Disorder

Specialized bright light is known as an effective antidepressant. Because most bipolar patients suffer from depressive episodes during the winter and in overcast conditions, researchers feel that light therapy should be an obvious choice for manic depression. Several studies have demonstrated the success of light therapy in averting depressive episodes in manic depression. In January 2004, the Cochrane Medical Review recommended light therapy for treating Bipolar Disorders.

Light appears to be successful for two reasons: First, bipolar patients suffer from low serotonin levels during depressive lows, and second, they are also supersensitive to melatonin fluctuations. Since light effectively regulates melatonin and serotonin, bipolar patients respond almost immediately.

    Light Therapy & Bipolar Children

Because light therapy poses no long-term negative side effects, it is also recommended for children. One of the more accurate works on childhood bipolar disorder, The Bipolar Child, recommends light therapy as a first line treatment.

Cautions With Light Therapy and Bipolar Disorder

Researchers have noted that manic depression sufferers (bipolar 1) should be on an effective mood stabilizer before using light therapy. Because light produces serotonin, it may precipitate a manic reaction. Light has been found to be safe when used for less than an hour at a time, but physician supervision is always recommended.” (Source: http://www.tanplusforhealth.com/lighting2.htm . 14. Dave,
Thanks for the daily bp news and commentary. It is helpful.
Wanted to know: Do you have bp? I think I read you are a caregiver. Do you have a degree in psychology? Medicine? Social work? Just curious. Not critical.
    Thanks,
    D.S.
