Bipolar Disorder? Change Your Mood, Change Your Day

Hi,

How’s it going?

I have had a ton of computer problems.

My lap top started dying and my computer Friend recommended that I simply transfer to a new one since I had a warranty.

I had so many problems. Yesterday before I made the change, it took me about 35 minutes to send one email.

That’s a long time : )

I think I have it all fixed finally. I was working on it until like 2:00am.

I actually used this backup service called Carbonite.com to transfer all the material. I highly recommend it for backing up your computer.

It saved me a ton of time and grief.

Well let me jump into this lesson today.

Did you know that you can change your mood at any time?

Your mood is a CHOICE.

Now, I’m not talking about the mood swings that come from the chemical imbalances of the bipolar disorder. You can’t help those.

I’m just talking about normal moods. The ones that everyone has.

The ones that supporters have.

Like you might be having a bad day.

You might still be stewing about something your loved one said or did the night before.

So you’re having a bad day today because of it.

Let it go!

There are some things you can change, and some things you can’t change.

What your loved one says or does is something you CAN’T change…

But your mood is something you CAN change.

You CAN control yourself.

You CAN control your own reactions.

And you CAN control your day.

Let’s go back to what your loved one said or did the night before.

Maybe you don’t think you handled the situation the way you would have liked to.

Maybe you’re still thinking about it, and wished you could have said or done something differently.

And now today you’re still stewing about it, and it’s affecting your mood.

But here’s the truth.

You CAN’T change yesterday!

What happened, happened.

And you can’t go back and change it.

You have to let it go.

So maybe you wish you did it differently.

If you learn from it, you can turn it from a negative into a positive.

Just like you can turn today’s mood from negative to positive.

That’s something I teach in my courses/systems below. That you can turn things from negative to positive. It all depends on your attitude, and understanding what you have control over, and what you don’t have control over. In my courses/systems below:

You DO have control over your mood today.

If you’re in a bad mood, you can change that.

You can stop brooding about yesterday…

Just accept what happened…

Learn from it what you can…

Try to do it differently next time the same situation presents itself…

Let it go…

And make today a better day…

Just by changing your mood!

David Oliver is the author of the shocking guide “Bipolar Disorder—The REAL Silent Killer.” Click Here to get FREE Information sent via email on how and why bipolar disorder kills.

  1. “You are not responsible for being down, but you are responsible for getting up.”

    – Jesse Jackson

  2. ” God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can; and the WISDOM to know the difference.”

Being in a “mixed episode” doesn’t help things when you want to change your mood. External stressors have a LOT to do with how/when you get “down.” I must admit – I feel better with the additional meds; no extreme “highs,” but I don’t know about the “downs.” My “mood” has stabilized for the moment, and I feel I CAN make better choices from here on. But I heartily disagree that ANY person with bipolar can CHOOSE to turn a negative mood into a positive mood just by “wishing.” “If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.”

I DO agree that we can “let it go” if something disagreeable happens “yesterday,” and go on with having a “positive” new day today. The “ugly” thoughts and actions of yesterday CAN turn around for TODAY, if we allow them to. But – like Kermit says: “It ain’t easy being green!”

BIG HUGS to all bipolar survivors and those who love us. May God bless you real good. I pray for my country. Look where it’s going…

  3. HI
I think its your brain that controls your type of mood your in. But other peoples moods reflect off you has well. And no you car,nt change yesterday and yes today is another day buy you try telling a deppressed person that.

  4. Thanks David for your comments this morning. I really appreciate the things you say. This not only helps with supporter of bipolar but also with every one and every aspect of life. I have a 6 year old daughter ( she is not bipolar) but I am thinking of ways to deal with her temper tantrums. I had decided to approach it a different way and let things go. Hearing your comment on deciding my own mood and letting things go this morning just helped me to know that I had made a good decision. This idea will help me with her and her bipolar/schizophrenic dad as well as my other children. Thankyou so much for your thoughts and comments and words of comfort.

  5. We can change our attitude through the coping methods, listening to music, taking a walk for me is feeding my two dogs and just petting them. They seem to understand my problem. Compassionate self talk is another key to changing your moods.

  6. Being a Supporter of Bipolar is difficult at times, especialy when the one I support is in Denial and refuses to be treated. Leaves me emotionaly Raw most of the time, episodes moving from one extreme to the other. I’ve been told, that there’s nothing I can do to get help until there is a crisis, I’ve been told that I’m in danger and I should get a divorce.
Not options I would or any anyone would even think of if this was any other illness or disease. Finding David’s messages in my e-mail every day has been educational and inspiring, learning that there is hope and that I’m not alone is beneficial.

Yesterday is yesterday, today is another day, I take one day at a time and sometimes hour by hour.
Living this every day is draining, it’s the glimmers of mental stability that remind me who I’m with and that there is hope.

  9. thank you dave you have helped me so much my girlfriend is bipolar and we have been together for 4 months and when we started dating i found ur website and all i can say is thank you . we have hads our ups and downs right now we are comeing out of a down and this was a hard one plus she is in school to be an e.m.t so the stress is here but with you advice we have done well .

  10. Dear Dave:
I totally agree with your theory on changing your thoughts to change your mood. In fact it makes me wonder if you’ve read the book I am presently reading; it’s called, “Change You Thoughts–Change Your Life” by Dr. Wayne Dyer. He has appeared on numerous PBS specials and his messages are clear and to the point. This is not some “new age” thought. In fact his resource is thousands of years old. The Tao, which you can think of as another name for the Holy Spirit, the Universal Energy, whatever floats your boat. Personally I interpret the Tao as another name for God’s Holy Spirit and what it would be telling us if we were to listen more carefully to our hearts. But everyday I read one verse and contemplate it. Sometimes I can’t do what it asks, like being silent for one day, but I can put that verse off for the weekend. I’m 47, been living with bipolar for 9 years now and I am finally stable for the last 2 years, (stable meaning no manic attacks)but still had low grade depression. I went to my doctor and complained, “no energy, sometimes not going to work or classes, not having the will or energy to clean my house.” He reduced the amount of Abilify I was on and added a stimulant to my regime. It was like a miracle–I feel like the old me before my Bipolar issue. I’m attending work and the University everyday I’m scheduled, I’m happy, and content, I’m doing well and somewhat enjoying being single for the first time in 30 years. I’ve been single for 11 years, since my divorce which precipitated my Clinical Depression and then the Bipolarism. Somehow all the chemicals got screwed up in my brain. Perhaps it was what led to the demise of my marriage, I don’t know. I just wish I had gotten help sooner. The right kind of help.

  11. Hi David,

Thanks for the e-mail today. I have been newly diagnosed with Bipolar Type II and have had an extremely rough time with getting my medication adjusted. I have been cycling and am now very anxious and stir-crazy. My mom has been getting information from you and she encouraged me to go online as well. I am glad I did. Your words of encouragement mean so much! Just keep doing what you are doing! You are a blessing!

  12. karen bissell- you and your husband have much more than what you may believe. first, there is your daughter’s school, you might check to see if they can provide some type of assessments. you don’t mention if you have health insurance, if you do see about scheduling an appointment with either a psychiatrist or psychologist, run it by your pcp. if you don’t have insurance, access county services such as a hospital, medical clinic or local mental health center. if those options aren’t available, contact your state mental health association or any mental health agency that can provide information and/or assistance. lastly, you have an internet connection, google bipolar disorder and bipolar supporters, get informed on bipolar disorder, if this is what your daughter actually has, join other forums. good luck.

  13. hi dave
thank for the email. it helps. a fight with my dad last night. i sould just silent. but somehow i cant do that last night. so, i do my defense. i told him things that he said and make me hurt. and he laugh and the next thing i know he accused me of being “misunderstand” he even told me that being misunderstood with him i’ve being doing such a great sins and it worth me hell, the deepest one. i know its not his fault but i can’t stand it. i can’t stop thingking of it. until i read what you just write, it helps alot. thaks you dave

  14. Your attitude determines whether when you walk through a rose garden whether you see, smell and enjoy the flowers or only feel the thorns. You have to focus your energy in the positive direction for positive results..

  15. “dear sir my husband and i have a 13 year old daughter that has signs of bipolar, but we cant afford anything to find out for sure if it is,she has all the systoms, and we are at the end of the road and dont know what to do. i wish we could afford your plans on here but we cant. im just lost and dont know where to go to with this. thank you for your time…karen bissell”

    Karen,
Even with insurance the cost is prohibitively high. One month when we had insurance problems, I got to see the cost of one month’s supply of meds for our daughter. Nearly $900.00. Talk about sticker shock, those $40.00 co-pays started looking small.

I have a friend who is bi-polar with no insurance and low income. She gets services from our local MHMR. Find your local family services or similiar resource and ask them for help. You may even check with your local child protection agency, they can often at least send you in the right direction, they’re not just about busting people who abuse children, they’re there to help.

Good luck Karen, and I will keep you and your family in our prayers.

    Laura

  16. ALL moods have a cause. Their is a reason for each & every Mood.
Moods are also caused by the “medication” we are forced to take.
Many or ALL mental illnesses can be atributed to a Normal reaction to one of lifes many & varied experiences. Others have a Psychical Health cause.
For example LOW Cholesterol can cause Depression.
NO psychiatrist I have assessed has EVER tried to get to the CAUSE of my feelings. Mearely Drug me into a Coma. Thus doing none to aid the problem.
    Troy.

  17. Troy:

From all the drivel I’ve heard from your many, many, many blogs…you are better off in a coma!!!!!!!!!

  18. Who is DEE DEE?
Very angry, you should know feelings are NOT allowed?
Yet Zen Monks also get the shits. Ask one.
So you agree that psych. & deceribation is good for people?
How & why is Brain Damage good?
You are right I have Medicaly Induced Brain Damage. As a result I am quite anoying. NO people Skills…..
The type of Brain Damage psych. “treatments” cause is Proven to result in the behaviours listed in the psych. Bible the DSM.
Do you have a coppy of the DSM? It gets bigger each Year, as MORE “disorders” are Voted in.
Homosexuality was once a “disorder,” Now it is NOT?
Yesit is when you R at the TOP of US Government? Strange indeed.
Bad at Math, that is a Disorder….
Professor of psych. told me: “Soon we will be “medicating: everyone, it will be the FALL of Humanity.”
Please inform me, as to why you see it as good.
POST psych. I have been in a state worse than Death. I am WORSE when on “medication.”
You could check out the CCHR website, for I agree fully with them. That is where I come from.Shared point of View, ONLY the facts, NO propagander, or Vile Preachings.
Have you ever been force fed any psych. “treatment?”
‘Till then I would recomend crawling back under your rock with Dave.
I know very little about the disorder, only I believe it to be Iatrogenic Via polypharmacy. I am told I have it, I am 35 I think. NO problem ’till I seen 1st psychiatrist….. at 26.
