Bipolar Disorder? Be This Way in 2009 Or Else

Hi,

I have been talking a lot about the New Year to get you thinking so you have a great one.

With a new year comes a lot of changes, and that’s what I want to talk to you about today.

Many people make New Year’s resolutions in the hopes that they’ll be able to keep them, but how can they, when they not only didn’t keep last year’s, but they can’t even remember WHAT resolutions they made last year?

(I’m not saying you’re one of those people, so don’t get mad at me – I’m just saying some people in general.)

But there’s a certain way you need to be in the coming year if you want to be successful in 2009.

You have to be

OPTIMISTIC.

Especially with what’s happened to our economy at the end of this past year.

Everybody has gotten so pessimistic, so down, so depressed, just so NEGATIVE!

Just look around you.

Business sales are down, because people are afraid to spend money, because they don’t know what is going to happen to our economy – they are afraid it’s going to get even worse.

Well, living in fear is not good for someone with bipolar disorder, or their supporter, either.

I even talk about that in my courses/systems, how negative emotions can be triggers to bipolar episodes:

The point is, you have to be OPTIMISTIC

in 2009 if you want to be successful in the coming year.

Not just if you have bipolar disorder and want to avoid an episode, but if you’re a supporter, too, just in your general attitude toward life. You can’t live in fear of what “might” happen, or it will bind you up into a negative attitude, and it might cause you to make bad decisions.

The way our economy is right now is already affecting people’s financial decisions.

It’s causing people unnecessary worry about the future, about things that might or might not happen, and that’s a bad thing for people with bipolar disorder and their supporters.

You really shouldn’t worry about a future that hasn’t even happened yet.

I mean, I know I always tell you to be prepared for the future, but there’s a big difference between being prepared and being worried.

That’s why you need to be OPTIMISTIC!

Being optimistic keeps you in a positive frame of mind, while worrying keeps you in a negative frame of mind.

I’ve known people who had bipolar disorder who stopped being optimistic and instead became very negative, and then they got depressed.

Then they got so depressed that they went into a bipolar depressive episode.

I’ve known others who worried themselves so much that it led to stress so bad that the stress and anxiety itself led them into bipolar episodes.

You wouldn’t want that for your loved one, would you?

Now which do you think will be better for your emotional health and the emotional health of your loved one?

I think it’s good advice for anyone, whether they have bipolar disorder or not to be OPTIMISTIC in 2009.

Do you agree or disagree with me?

  1. I agree it is best to be optimistic but it sure is hard at this time ’cause my daughter is in prison. It was court ordered that she be allowed to stay on her meds but instead there was a break in coverage and then they just put her on Depakote, not sure that is how you spell it or not. She has spent the last couple of years going from one rehab to another…never getting stable. This last episode began as rapid cycling and she just went downhill from there. I can’t afford to purchase any of your programs but do enjoy reading and gathering info from your emails. My daughter will be 30 next year and has had drug problems ever since she was a teen….trying to self medicate I’m sure. Not sure why she couldn’t have been court ordered to a mental facility where prehaps she could get the help she needs so badly. Judge said he couldn’t do it…only option he had was prison. I just hope she comes out of this ok. Please keep us in your prayers. Thanks for listening!!

  2. i read all the articles im sent, they are very true and helpful, from animal to people i beleive we all are bipolar, there are scales even in music !

  3. Thanks Dave, for your time and effort in sharing valuable information with your experiences dealing with people who live with being bipolar. Today’s offering on optimism is particularly helpful as my husband lives in a constant negative state. He refers to is as being realistic and being prepared for anything that might happen. To do this he mentally creates every negative scenario that could ever remotely happen and then analyses and re-ananlyses how the event might occur. Instead of this giving him comfort on how he might handle whatever he is fretting about, he does just that…frets and gets all worked up and upsets those around him. I wish I could find a way to help him see that all this fretting does not really pay off, that most of what he worries about never comes to be. Any ideas for that?
    Thanks.

  4. i believe this is so true but could you tell me what exact steps do you take in teaching your self and others to be and try to stay optomistic?

  5. I agree Dave. A positive attitude is contagious and as a supporter this is very important. It’s hard at times but I tell myself it could always be worse.

  6. It’s easy to say stay optimistic, but I don’t see it as easy going when you are not among the “lucky”ones.Still I agree it is important to try to see the right side of things.

  7. I agree. I have family member will bi-polar and severe chronic dpression who is grown son still living with me (unable to work). It is so hard to stay optimistic but I will never lose hope for a better day. I just need to know where to start. It is an overwhelming disease when the person does not try as hard as you do to improve their mental health. Thank you for great information, David.
I have been getting you daily emails for quite a loing while and need advice on where is to start to get him better. We have been to the local mental health clinic and he will not continue to participate in attending groups or make it to dr. appointments. Please advise me:) I know you are not a doctor but with all your experience and knowledge, I would like to know what I should do. Petition him into treatment? Buy one of your courses? if so, which one would be best for us? Just keep trying and continue to support as I have been doing? Thanks again 🙂

  8. “Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday!” SO – if “today” is not so bad, then why “worry” about it??!!

Unfortunately, there are no “recipes” for optimism; you either have an optimistic outlook on life, or are negative. My Dad had me read Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People” when I was very young, and I think that has helped me to be somewhat “optimistic.” I TRY not to worry about those things I have NO control over; I “let go and let God.” ALL my stressors now are external; my innermost being is looking forward to the future as being “good.”

ALSO – “Lord, give me the strength to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference,” has helped. It HAS, unfortunately, taken most of my lifetime to learn how to live this way, with bipolar.

Good luck to ALL who have put “be more optimistic” on their New Year’s Resolution list!!

BIG HUGS to all bipolar survivors and those who love us. May God bless you real good. I pray for my country.

  9. I’m not bi-polar, but I know what will help everyone who is…..there are 33 food Laws in the scriptures that most everyone ignores, they were put there by The Creator so there wouldn’t be a disease like bi-polar…these Laws are a part of the 613 Laws of Peace…..One Law is staying away from the fish that don’t have finns and scales! When the unclean food is eaten because we don’t know any better, there is a curse or penalty for braking these Laws and they are called the diseases that people are suffering and dying from….what the unclean food does – the toxins from that kind of food mixes with the natural chemistry that the Creator put into our bodies to keep a perfect balance – the unclean food short circuits that balance and causes the bi-polar episodes – and other diseases
the medications that are taken may allow some relief, but the ultimate relief is keeping all the food Laws and all the Laws and putting forth the effort to do so will allow the Creator to show mercy on you and He will allow you to live forever….these Laws are taught at The House of Yahweh in Abilene, Texas…..they can be contacted at http://www.yahweh.com or call their voice mail 800-613-9494 and be put on the mailing list for the newsletters and monthly magazine and there are booklets available on line that teach healthy living and with specific questions you can email them the email address is on their web site….so now you can have a truly great New Year…..and be patient you will get the answers to your questions and this is the best information that I can share with you…James.

  10. I ordered your 10 secrets for boarderline personality disorder my wife has and she is also bipolar. And you sent me two books of 10 secrets and i want one of your bipolar disorder books to help me with my wife. May we even change the book . Thank you Rodney

  11. My heart goes out to everyone who is bi-polar and their families! It is a horrible disease and while it looks hopeless and impossible to live with – you can help yourself greatly by staying away from certain food that is unclean to you. There are 613 Laws of Peace in the Holy Scriptures, 33 of them pertain to what we shouldn’t be eating and when you eat the unclean
their toxins mix with the Creator’s chemistry that He put into our bodies to keep a perfect balance……and that short-circuits our bodies and causes these diseases, like bi-polar…..you can help yourself greatly by staying away from the unclean and you can find out about these Laws by going to our website http://www.yahweh.com and if you want specific information – there is an email address and phone numbers available also you may want to be put onto the mailing list for the newsletter and monthly magazine by calling 800-613-9494….by making these contacts you will be learning why you have this disease and how to get your life back and Live Forever with Perfect Health….and be patient, you will get your answers!!!!

  12. Dave, My son that I thought would never edmit there is any thing wrong. I have sent E-mail from you to him and he is no longer in denial. Since he wouldn’t see any one. I have worked on mental heath. I have taken Remeron for bad situational depression. He got an M.D to give him that and clonapin. For now he is doing much better and is actually being nice to me which he hasn’t since this condition flared up 5 years ago. He is very talanted. Musician, song writer, and not a bad artist. He just found a job and as soon as their insurance goes through heis going to get a personality test get meds. they think will be the best one. He has taken many uf the newest ones. He also did not want to spend the money on Meds. as they are so high priced. He is 54 and due to bad judgement has got himself in a mess , but he has work now and is playing and writing music. He gives music lessons also, Just sine I talked him int trying the 45mg. Remeron. He is like coming alive again. Thank You Dave

  13. I agree with you entirely . I had a good friend die from cancer last memorial weekend and I was depressed for a couple of months. It took a positive experience to bring me out of depression. Last July I sold my house which had been for sale for over a year. I got close to the asking price and was able to move into a condominium of my dreams. This experience brought me out of my depression. I was very busy the next month moving. Thank you for sending me this Email and allowing me to reply. Chuck

  14. Hi David,
You are so right: there is only one way through for the bipolar supporter and that is to remain truelly positive. The kinds of things we want for our loved ones we should shower upon ourselves as supporters- healthy food , healthy living, healthy lifestyle and work progression, healthy self talk.I try never to talk negatively about things, because that just digs the hole for me to climb right into, instead I try and find 5 things in my day that have been great then Ill go find a whole pile more.. Do things that are positive for yourself: Ive started writing that novel I ‘have been promising myself I would write ( it seems like for years) . See David your philosphies and practical proccesses are catching on.

    Once again my heartfelt gratitude
    Regards
    Shona

  15. Hi David. I really enjoy reading your email everyday. I always look forward for what you have to say, because it really helps me a lot as a supporter. I wish I could afford to buy your books, it seems very interesting but for the time being I cant, probably in the long run. I’m very optimistic every day of my life, I always looking forward but sometimes how things are going I get a little worried. Your email keps me going. Thanks again. Ange

  16. Dave,
I so agree and I realize that at times that can be hard to do …. however, one of the things I do, when I realize that I am being influenced by the negativity around me I try to shift the lens I view the world from… to an optimistic vision… and kind of create a paradigm shift. I do this through remembering and thinking about all that is good in my life…. 🙂
Thank you for all that you do!
    Peace and many blessings,
    Your friend,
    Filiz

  17. Hi David,

I have bipolar and in addition to my medication I have been trying alternative therapy. I was very skeptical at first but I have been trying meditation and hypnotherapy and it has made such a difference! Hypnotherapy in particular has been really good because it has helped me to think positive and not be so hard on myself. I am telling you this because I would highly recommend it to others with bipolar!

    Keep up the good work!

  18. I have a sibling with bipolar disorder (and, we think, some other issues; it’s a nightmare). I want to recommend to people “Life is Like a Line,” an inspiring book about surviving bipolar disorder. It exposes the difficulties of mental health issues and the prospects of survival. Very honest, in terms of living with a mental illness.
