{"id":79,"date":"2008-07-19T07:53:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-19T11:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bipolarcentral.com\/bipolarsupporterblog\/?p=79"},"modified":"2009-03-19T13:15:29","modified_gmt":"2009-03-19T17:15:29","slug":"bipolar-disorder-and-emotions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bipolarsupporter.com\/bipolarsupporterblog\/bipolar-disorder-and-emotions\/","title":{"rendered":"Bipolar Disorder and Emotions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hi,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">How&#8217;s it going?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I hope you are doing well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When it comes to emotions, everyone has them.\u00a0 So it doesn\u2019t matter, at least when it comes to emotions, whether you have bipolar disorder or not.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But for someone who has the disorder, their emotions can go up and down like a rollercoaster.\u00a0 So, as a supporter of a loved one with the\u00a0 disorder, this is one of the first things you have to learn to deal with. Unfortunately, this is one of the things you will always have to deal with, as emotions are a part of the mood swings that are a symptom of bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In my courses\/systems, I list all the symptoms of each of the types of the disorder:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">SUPPORTING AN ADULT WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?<br \/>\nVisit:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bipolarsupporter.com\/report11\">http:\/\/www.bipolarsupporter.com\/report11<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">SUPPORTING A CHILD\/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?<br \/>\nVisit:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bipolarparenting.com\">http:\/\/www.bipolarparenting.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER?<br \/>\nVisit:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.survivebipolar.net\">http:\/\/www.survivebipolar.net<\/a><br \/>\nFor now, though, let\u2019s just talk about the emotions of Bipolar I and II.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Bipolar I, periods of major depression alternate with periods of severe mania. During the mania, your loved one may exhibit the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00b7 either elevated or irritated moods (emotions)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00b7grandiose thoughts, ideas or behaviors<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00b7 inflated self-esteem<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00b7decreased need for sleep<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00b7 racing thoughts<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00b7 unusual agitation<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00b7 excessive involvement in pleasurable activities like shopping sprees or sexual encounters<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So with Bipolar I, you\u2019re dealing with both high and low moods (emotions).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With Bipolar II, periods of hypomania (a mild to moderate level of mania which\u00a0 is not severe enough to interfere with your loved one\u2019s ability to function) alternate with periods of major depression.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So if your loved one has been diagnosed with Bipolar II, the worst emotion in them that you\u2019ll have to deal with is their depression.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In general, though you have to deal with the changing, shifting, sometimes rapidly swinging and widely extreme mood swings characteristic of bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But what about your own emotions?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Do your emotions shift to match your loved one\u2019s?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You need to listen to your own emotions, because they\u2019re like a barometer, and they can gauge what\u2019s really going on with you \u2013 they\u2019re usually trying to tell you something.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Emotions are like a guidance system.
