{"id":597,"date":"2009-01-18T10:03:19","date_gmt":"2009-01-18T14:03:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bipolarcentral.com\/bipolarsupporterblog\/?p=597"},"modified":"2009-03-11T22:33:29","modified_gmt":"2009-03-12T02:33:29","slug":"bipolar-lesson-from-a-child","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bipolarsupporter.com\/bipolarsupporterblog\/bipolar-lesson-from-a-child\/","title":{"rendered":"Bipolar Lesson from a Child"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hi,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">How&#8217;s it going today?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I saw this child in the grocery store the other day with his mother.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now, this kid couldn&#8217;t have been more than 4 or 5.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Usually, kids that age are tugging on mom&#8217;s sleeve, wanting this or that, screaming or yelling, and causing general havoc to everyone around them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What made this child different was that he was just walking down each aisle looking at everything like he was amazed, like everything was brand new to him &#8211; like he was seeing everything for the very first time!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When I go to the grocery store, I just go in and get what I need, and leave, don&#8217;t you?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I&#8217;ve been there so many times, that it&#8217;s just a chore for me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">How could anyone possibly find it exciting and new?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But remember, now, I&#8217;m an adult, and things like grocery stores no longer hold any allure for me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Maybe I&#8217;m just getting old&#8230; LOL<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But I kept thinking about this child even as I left the grocery store and went on with my errands.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For some reason, he had left a big impression upon me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What if we could all stay like that child?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What if we still looked at life that way?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Like everything was still new and exciting&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Like there was wonder and awe in little things&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">New things to still explore and delight in&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Instead of being &#8220;adult&#8221; and &#8220;mature&#8221; about everything, so grown-up that we forget how to be a child and just enjoy life?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just because your loved one has bipolar disorder doesn&#8217;t mean you have to lose the perspective of a child.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just because they have bipolar disorder doesn&#8217;t mean you can&#8217;t still be happy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just because they have bipolar disorder doesn&#8217;t mean you have to go around like you have this chip on your shoulder all the time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In my courses\/systems below, I talk about the hope you can have that your loved one can become high-functioning &#8211; life between episodes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In fact, you should be living as normal a life as possible so that stability becomes a reality and there are fewer episodes in your loved one&#8217;s life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I&#8217;m not saying to go bungie-jumping or anything just to have excitement in your life, but there are other things you can do to make your life enjoyable in spite of the bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It&#8217;s all in your attitude!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Think about that child in the grocery store.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What made him different than other kids his age?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His wonderment at the things around him!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You can have that same wonderment again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Try to see the beauty in the things around you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Enjoy the simple pleasures in life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Be grateful each day that your loved one is not in an episode.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Do things together that you both enjoy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These things don&#8217;t have to be complicated, extravagant, or expensive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I know a couple who both have bipolar disorder. And one of the things they both enjoy doing is playing board games together, like backgammon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They enjoy just being together and talking.  About &#8220;everything&#8221; and &#8220;nothing,&#8221; they say.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the greatest pleasures in life is simple companionship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Having family around you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Going through old photographs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Watching the birds in your backyard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Seeing a movie together.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reading books side by side.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cooking a meal together.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Going on a date (no matter how long you&#8217;ve been together).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Watching the rain (or snow) fall outside your window.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Take a lesson from the child in the grocery store.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Try to see the world from a child&#8217;s perspective again, and you&#8217;ll be much happier.
