First, I would like to welcome<br \/>4000 new subscribers to my mailing list. That&#8217;s<br \/>about how many have subscribed over the last<br \/>3 days or so.<\/p>\n<p>Welcome.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, today I wanted to talk about <br \/>an VERY IMPORTANT concept about bipolar disorder<br \/>that my dad, mom and many other still <br \/>struggle with. It was something that I was<br \/>reminded this past weekend when I went<br \/>to the Strongman Competition to see<br \/>my friend compete.<\/p>\n<p>If you are new to my list, let me get<br \/>you up to speed. This Saturday my friend<br \/>competed in a Strongman Competition. That&#8217;s<br \/>a competition where you list all kinds of<br \/>heavy objects and they time you and\/or see<br \/>how many things you can lift. This<br \/>has nothing to do with bipolar disorder<br \/>BUT while I was there, I was reminded<br \/>of a VERY important lesson related to<br \/>bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>I am going to share it with you today.<br \/>Here&#8217;s how I was reminded.<\/p>\n<p>So when I went to the competition,<br \/>there were many people. It was like<br \/>100 degrees and I was super hot. I <br \/>did however bring food and lots of<br \/>water. <\/p>\n<p>As I walked around and looked for my<br \/>friend when I got there, I noticed<br \/>there were HUGE people. I mean HUGE.<br \/>Some people were at least 350 pounds<br \/>or more. There were woman there as well.<br \/>Some of them were really big or smaller<br \/>but you could obviously tell they were<br \/>really strong.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I found my friend and spoke with<br \/>him. I didn&#8217;t want to bother him because<br \/>he was &#8220;in the zone&#8221; preparing for his<br \/>first even which was pressing tires attached<br \/>to a truck axel. <\/p>\n<p>DON&#8217;T WORRY THERE IS A LESSON ON BIPOLAR DISORDER<br \/>COMING SOON<\/p>\n<p>I also found my friend&#8217;s wife and family and<br \/>I spoke to them for a while. Then I decided<br \/>to go and talk to people and strike up a competition<br \/>and see what people say how they got so strong.<\/p>\n<p>I met one of the world&#8217;s strongest men and he<br \/>is able to dead lift 900 pounds 3 times. Which<br \/>is a huge accomplishment. I met other World<br \/>Record Holders for various events.<\/p>\n<p>I started to ask people, &#8220;Hey is it technique,<br \/>strength, training, that makes you so strong?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I thought the strongmen wouldn&#8217;t want to talk<br \/>to me and not reveal their secrets but I was<br \/>happy to see they would talk and this<br \/>is where I was reminded of a HUGE lesson<br \/>that is related to bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>One guy said to me, &#8220;You have to train,<br \/>practice, I sacrifice a lot and I want<br \/>to be number one. There&#8217;s a lot of stuff<br \/>that I have to do to be good at this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another guy said to me, &#8220;I had to stop<br \/>power lifting and just focus on strongman<br \/>because you can&#8217;t do both.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I another person said, &#8220;I had to stop body <br \/>building and just focus on strongman. Body<br \/>builders try this and get smoked because<br \/>it&#8217;s much different.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>NOTE-Smoked means, hmm how do I describe<br \/>it, let&#8217;s say it&#8217;s slang for beat really<br \/>badly.<\/p>\n<p>Person after person basically was saying<br \/>if you want to be good at strongman competitions<br \/>you have to focus, train, sacrifice and probably<br \/>have to forget other things you may be doing<br \/>that interferes with it like other sports<br \/>or training you may be doing like body building,<br \/>power lifting, and certain kinds of exercise.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you shouldn&#8217;t run a lot of long<br \/>distances when you are a strongman, it&#8217;s not<br \/>good for you. You should play basketball<br \/>either according to many.<\/p>\n<p>WHAT&#8217;S THIS HAVE TO DO WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?<\/p>\n<p>It has a ton to do with bipolar disorder. Nobody<br \/>had bipolar disorder there but they did reveal<br \/>a strategy and philosophy what is so important<br \/>to coping and dealing with bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>That is, you and your loved one will have to make<br \/>choices when it comes to bipolar disorder. Some<br \/>choices you make will help, others will make <br \/>bipolar episodes more frequent and often.<\/p>\n<p>Many times, sacrifices will have to be made.<br \/>Let me explain. Okay, when my mom was first<br \/>coming out of her episode, I began to look<br \/>at what she had been doing in the past that<br \/>may have triggered her bipolar episode.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a whole long list of things<br \/>but one thing in particular was really problematic<br \/>and I saw it would have to go&#8211;meaning if she<br \/>wanted to maintain stability, she would not be<br \/>able to do this.<\/p>\n<p>What is it? It&#8217;s work full time, and baby<br \/>sit for my brother&#8217;s kids almost full time.<\/p>\n<p>When I began to investigate what had happened<br \/>prior to my mom getting into an episode I found<br \/>she was getting up at 5:30am in the morning<br \/>and then going to work and then immediately going<br \/>to my brother&#8217;s house to baby sit for hours<br \/>and then driving home. It was a 50 minute to<br \/>his house one way.<\/p>\n<p>Based on common sense and my talks with multiple<br \/>doctors, therapists and people with bipolar disorder<br \/>my mom was doing too much and the stress she was<br \/>putting herself under was acting a trigger<br \/>for her bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>NOW, when I told my mom, I highly recommended no<br \/>more baby sitting she was saying how in order<br \/>to be a good grandmother she had to baby sit<br \/>and also my brother was kind of demanding it.<\/p>\n<p>I told her that I would handle my brother no <br \/>problem but I said, and I will never forget<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;MOM YOU HAVE CHOICES TO MAKE, EITHER YOU<br \/>WILL CHOICE THINGS THAT HELP YOU BE STABLE<br \/>OR YOU WON&#8217;T&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t screaming at her but very firm. She<br \/>actually thought about it and totally agreed.<br \/>I said, if you go in and out of episodes<br \/>what good will you be as a grandmother<br \/>anyway.<\/p>\n<p>And I suggested that it was almost abusive for<br \/>my brother to demand someone drive almost 2 hours<br \/>a day 5 and 6 days a week to baby sit. I said,<br \/>&#8220;What the heck, Stephen is loaded with money<br \/>he can go and pay for 3 baby sitters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>My brother works on Wall Street so he has<br \/>the money AND as a side note, he didn&#8217;t<br \/>contribute one dime of money to any of my mom&#8217;s<br \/>bills when they were raining down on her and my<br \/>myself.<\/p>\n<p>So anyway, my mom stopped the baby sitting,<br \/>stopped working full time and started doing things<br \/>that me, her, her doctor and therapist all thought<br \/>were good ideas. Over time, we saw what should<br \/>be added and what should be subtracted. <\/p>\n<p>Meaning over a year, we saw that certain<br \/>activities had to go and certain ones had to<br \/>stay. For example, my mom has to exercise<br \/>regularly, if not she is more likely to<br \/>go into a bipolar episode. My mom has to<br \/>avoid foods with lots of sugar or it will possibly<br \/>trigger a bipolar disorder episode.<\/p>\n<p>RECENTLY, my mom&#8217;s doctor says she can&#8217;t<br \/>watch TV beyond, and I think it&#8217;s 8:00pm<br \/>any more. This is just recent. <\/p>\n<p>So my mom, like the strongman, has choices<br \/>to make based on her goals. She could not<br \/>exercise, eat lots of food with sugar,<br \/>watch TV all night long but then she will<br \/>not hit her goal of being stable. So like<br \/>the strongman, my mom has a goal and there&#8217;s<br \/>sacrifices that will have to be made.<\/p>\n<p>This is such an important point to learn<br \/>and understand. <\/p>\n<p>And if you are supporting someone with <br \/>bipolar disorder, there are many choices<br \/>you will have to make that either work<br \/>for or against your loved one with bipolar<br \/>disorder. <\/p>\n<p>For example, let&#8217;s say that you are married<br \/>to someone with bipolar disorder and you<br \/>know that person has to be in bed by 10:00pm,<br \/>then you should NOT pressure them to go to things<br \/>that will mean they can&#8217;t go to bed at that time.<\/p>\n<p>You probably should even bring them up. If you can<br \/>go out to a party and it&#8217;s too late, how about<br \/>you simply don&#8217;t go and do something else or<br \/>simply leave early. It&#8217;s things like this<br \/>and others that you will have to choice<br \/>if you are a supporter.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a supporter and married to someone<br \/>you may NOT be able to take that job that moves<br \/>you across the country because your loved one<br \/>has a great support system in place and you don&#8217;t<br \/>want to mess it up? Is this fair? I don&#8217;t know<br \/>but this is what needs to be done.<\/p>\n<p>Well I have to take off for the day.
