I have had a lot of people<br \/>ask me for suggestions as to how to<br \/>tell their boss they have bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>I recently wrote an article on the subject.<\/p>\n<p>Here it is&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Oh before I get to that. Someone wrote me<br \/>yesterday: &#8220;I saw a David Oliver who worked<br \/>at the circus, was that you?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I can tell you for sure, I don&#8217;t work at a <br \/>circus. And also, I am NOT a lawyer, doctor,<br \/>therapist, dog catcher, insurance agent, <br \/>spy for the drug industry (I get this a lot),<br \/>or any other kind of professional. <\/p>\n<p>You should question everything that I say<br \/>and anything that I write is my opinion<br \/>not professional advice.<\/p>\n<p>And if you go to the circus, I won&#8217;t<br \/>be there \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Okay here&#8217;s the article:<\/p>\n<p>Telling Your Employer You\u2019ve Got <br \/>Bipolar Disorder?  <\/p>\n<p>Here Are Seven Suggestions<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps you\u2019ve been thinking about it for a <br \/>while, but just didn\u2019t feel it very necessary <br \/>until now.  Or perhaps you\u2019re changing jobs and <br \/>forced with deciding whether your new employer <br \/>really needs to know you suffer with <br \/>bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>Making the decision to tell your supervisor or <br \/>other official at work about your bipolar disorder <br \/>is not a small step.  Here are seven tips that might <br \/>help you make your disclosure on bipolar disorder <br \/>when the time comes.<\/p>\n<p>1. Do some detective work before you reveal <br \/>your bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, just do your homework.  Before you <br \/>actually make the decision to reveal you have <br \/>bipolar disorder, feel your supervisor out on <br \/>his attitude towards the topic of mental illness <br \/>in general.  If you can, try to discover if others <br \/>with bipolar disorder have been hired?  How well <br \/>have they been treated?  <\/p>\n<p>2. Give serious thought to disclosure on<br \/>bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not something done lightly, like telling <br \/>someone you have a hang nail.  There is still a <br \/>large stigma associated with bipolar disorder.  <br \/>In fact, you may be surprised just how many people <br \/>aren\u2019t even sure what it is. Make sure you\u2019re ready <br \/>to make the announcement on bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>3. Consider having your therapist sit in on <br \/>the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>While this may sound extreme, the presence of your <br \/>therapist is an excellent idea.  In this way, <br \/>he can answer any questions about the nature <br \/>of bipolar disorder in general.  He would also <br \/>provide an excellent reference to reassure a <br \/>hesitant supervisor that even with your <br \/>bipolar disorder, you\u2019ll function just fine <br \/>around the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>4. Decide, ahead of time how you\u2019ll handle <br \/>your disclosure of bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>Visualize how the meeting will go.  Once you\u2019ve <br \/>decided who\u2019ll be attending the meeting announcing <br \/>your bipolar disorder, then decide you will actually <br \/>be doing most of the speaking.  Rehearse what <br \/>could possibly be said about your bipolar disorder <br \/>and most importantly, what you can say in reply. <br \/>You are probably well aware of many of the questions <br \/>people have concerning bipolar disorder; prepare to <br \/>talk to these points.  Also be prepared to reassure <br \/>the fears of any possible performance problems your <br \/>employer may think there will be with your <br \/>bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>5. Decide, specifically, what person at your <br \/>workplace you\u2019ll reveal your bipolar disorder to.<\/p>\n<p>Are you just going to reveal your bipolar disorder <br \/>to a few trusted co-workers?  Are you planning to <br \/>tell your supervisor?  Or perhaps you\u2019re just going <br \/>to reveal it to the human resources director.  <br \/>Whoever you tell about your bipolar disorder, be <br \/>sure you feel comfortable with the decision.<\/p>\n<p>6. Be sure to talk about limitations<\/p>\n<p>When discussing your bipolar disorder with your <br \/>employer, you need to be specific if you feel <br \/>you\u2019ll have any limitations at all placed on you <br \/>because of the condition.  Will you need any <br \/>out-of-the-ordinary accommodations?  If you have <br \/>no limitations related to your bipolar disorder, <br \/>reassure him of this as well.  You  know it\u2019s in <br \/>the back of his mind anyway.<\/p>\n<p>7. Describe the symptoms<\/p>\n<p>Even if your employer says he\u2019s familiar with <br \/>bipolar disorder, describe the symptoms you <br \/>develop when you\u2019re in an episode.  Make sure <br \/>that she understands these.  But more than that, <br \/>explain to her the best methods of handling these <br \/>symptoms.  Also, don\u2019t forget to tell your employer <br \/>any necessary information your doctor may want her <br \/>to know on bipolar disorder. Type it<br \/>in a search engine and read what comes up.<br \/>Then swing by the library and ask the &#8220;reference<br \/>librarian&#8221; to help you find information on<br \/>it and understand it.
