Her id is SuzanneWA. I am<br \/>trying to get a hold of her. If you<br \/>are her, or know her, please have<br \/>her email me at:<br \/>feedbacktodave@mentalhealthworld.net<\/p>\n<p>Thanks. <\/p>\n<p>Okay let&#8217;s move on to today&#8217;s<br \/>topic. We have been talking about<br \/>goal setting for several days now.<\/p>\n<p>I am happy to report that I have been<br \/>flooded with phone calls, emails,<br \/>faxes and a few letters in the us mail<br \/>about how they are excited to think about<br \/>and set goals related to bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>Actually on Thursday I spent 7 hours<br \/>in the library working on my goals for<br \/>2008. I actually do quarterly goals<br \/>so I do this 4 times a year.<\/p>\n<p>I still have to do a little more<br \/>work which I will do probably today\/<br \/>tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, someone wrote me:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dave, it&#8217;s amazing. What you said<br \/>the other day was so simple. The fact<br \/>of thinking about your future, where<br \/>you want to go and how you are going<br \/>to get there. I haven&#8217;t done this in<br \/>30 years. No wonder I am not going<br \/>anywhere. I am going to my therapist<br \/>to work on what my goals are and<br \/>I will talk to my doctor about them.<br \/>Thank you for making me think of this.&#8221;<br \/>-Cherie<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s great Cherie! I am really<br \/>proud of you. Also I noticed<br \/>a whole lot of people are talking<br \/>to their doctor AND therapist<br \/>about their goals. This is great.<br \/>EXACTLY what you should do.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s kind of amazing when you <br \/>sit back and think about how little<br \/>time people devote to goal setting<br \/>and planning for their own life.<\/p>\n<p>I have a friend who came from<br \/>another country. She barely spoke<br \/>English and had absolutely no<br \/>money whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p>When she first got here, she bought<br \/>many books to help improve her<br \/>English. She started buying <br \/>motivational and goal setting<br \/>books. <\/p>\n<p>She set several specific goals<br \/>8 years ago:<\/p>\n<p>earn more than $100,000 a year<br \/>live in a big house on 5 acres of land<br \/>drive a black high end BWM<br \/>be married<br \/>live in the country<br \/>Have a job with a lot of responsibility<\/p>\n<p>She called me the other day and I was<br \/>telling her about how I was talking<br \/>about bipolar disorder and goal setting.<\/p>\n<p>She said goal setting was important<br \/>and how she had just found her list of goals<br \/>she wrote out and set years ago and was reading<br \/>frequently up until a couple of years ago.<\/p>\n<p>She said she was amazed that every goal<br \/>she wrote down and set she had reached.<\/p>\n<p>I asked her if she thought at the time<br \/>it was possible? She said no but she <br \/>followed the exercises in the books.<\/p>\n<p>It was amazing story and hard for me<br \/>to believe but it&#8217;s true.<\/p>\n<p>But back to bipolar disorder. I really<br \/>believe so many people fall short of <br \/>their potential when they are dealing<br \/>with bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>On the one hand, there&#8217;s the person<br \/>who is not stable, manic who gets a whole<br \/>lot done but then crashes. <\/p>\n<p>Then on the other hand, there is the <br \/>stable person who doesn&#8217;t set any goals,<br \/>live on disability day to day really not<br \/>doing a whole lot. I find many of these<br \/>people are kind of afraid to set goals<br \/>or be more than they are because the<br \/>fear bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no question that you have to<br \/>factor bipolar disorder into your goal<br \/>setting. But when I talk to people I still<br \/>think they fall short of what kind of goals<br \/>they can set for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>I really believe that the way around<br \/>this problem is to set goals and work<br \/>with your doctor\/therapist about what<br \/>will not negative affect your bipolar<br \/>disorder.<\/p>\n<p>So, again, like my mom, you have to<br \/>work with your doctor and therapist<br \/>when goal settings.<\/p>\n<p>There is a side benefit of this.<br \/>When you show your doctor and therapist,<br \/>you&#8217;re serious about changing and improving<br \/>your life, they work harder to help you.<br \/>You wind up getting better treatment<br \/>from them. You&#8217;ll see.<\/p>\n<p>Now if you are a bipolar supporter,<br \/>you too, can be involved with your<br \/>loved one&#8217;s goal setting by going<br \/>to a therapy session or doctor visit<br \/>that will be devoted to goal setting.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE-This will be primarily for those<br \/>supporting stable individuals who will<br \/>allow them in the visits.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of bipolar supporters, <br \/>I got a lot of feedback<br \/>of people saying that they took<br \/>my emails to their loved ones<br \/>to talk about setting goals. Many<br \/>bipolar supporters are now<br \/>talking about setting goals with<br \/>their loved one&#8217;s with bipolar<br \/>disorder.<\/p>\n<p>On this note, I have received a number<br \/>of voice messages and also emails<br \/>about how supporters feel bad thinking<br \/>of all the bad things that bipolar<br \/>disorder has caused.<\/p>\n<p>Let me explain further by one<br \/>email I got.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;David, Hello. Thank you for all<br \/>you do. I have been on your list<br \/>for more than 1 year. I have learned<br \/>so much from you. I totally<br \/>agree with your concept of goal setting<br \/>with bipolar disorder. I spent time<br \/>thinking about what I wanted our life<br \/>to be like next year. My wife is<br \/>now stable, we did all you said<br \/>in your courses and it worked. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s really hard for me not to be<br \/>really angry when I think about <br \/>where we are. We lost all our money.<br \/>I lost many friends, family members.<br \/>I&#8217;ve been made to look a fool. Our<br \/>children are angry because of all<br \/>these episodes. <\/p>\n<p>When I think about setting goals. I think<br \/>about how much I lost and how far we<br \/>have to go. It makes me mad at my wife. I <br \/>feel guilty for being mad at her, I know<br \/>she didn&#8217;t mean to do all these terrible<br \/>things and it was the illness. I do now<br \/>separate the bipolar like you have said.<br \/>What should I do?&#8221;<br \/>-Frank.<\/p>\n<p>Frank&#8217;s email summarizes a whole lot of <br \/>emails that I have gotten that basically<br \/>a bipolar supporter is thinking about goals<br \/>but feeling really bad because he\/she is looking<br \/>back and seeing all the damage that is done<br \/>from bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what I have to say. There is no<br \/>question that bipolar disorder is destructive.<br \/>There&#8217;s no question that for many, myself included,<br \/>it winds up making you way behind.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the think you have to realize about<br \/>bipolar disorder that most people don&#8217;t. Frank<br \/>does I think however.<\/p>\n<p>The person with the disorder does NOT want<br \/>it and did NOT want to do all these bad things.<\/p>\n<p>Many tend to forget this. Today I don&#8217;t<br \/>but up until like 8 months ago, I would as<br \/>well. I had to train myself to remember:<\/p>\n<p>-there is my mom<br \/>-there is bipolar disorder<br \/>-bipolar disorder is the enemy<br \/>-bipolar disorder does the bad things<br \/>-it&#8217;s not my mom that does the bad things<br \/>-she didn&#8217;t want bipolar disorder<br \/>-there is way more good than bad.<\/p>\n<p>Things like this. My brother on the<br \/>other hand focuses on all the bad, <br \/>thinks my mom is doing it all on purpose,<br \/>and believe some how there is more<br \/>bad than good (when I know since<br \/>I grew up in the house this is not<br \/>true).<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what you should do if you <br \/>are goal setting and feeling bad<br \/>because you feel like you have lost<br \/>so much.<\/p>\n<p>First, realize you can get it back. For<br \/>the most part, you can get back anything<br \/>important that has been lost in bipolar<br \/>episodes.<\/p>\n<p>Second, realize, now you know what you need<br \/>to do to prevent this in the future. This<br \/>is a good thing.<\/p>\n<p>Third, get as much information as you can<br \/>on how to move faster to get back what&#8217;s<br \/>important.<\/p>\n<p>This can be done through your own research<br \/>or by getting things like my courses\/systems<br \/>below:<\/p>\n<p>SUPPORTING AN ADULT WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?<br \/>Visit:<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bipolarsupporter.com\/report11\">http:\/\/www.bipolarsupporter.com\/report11<\/a><\/p>\n<p>SUPPORTING A CHILD\/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?<br \/>Visit:<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bipolarparenting.com\">http:\/\/www.bipolarparenting.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER?<br \/>Visit:<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.survivebipolar.net\">http:\/\/www.survivebipolar.net<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fourth, keep telling yourself over<br \/>and over again that your loved one<br \/>did not want bipolar disorder and doesn&#8217;t<br \/>do anything bad on purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, realize that bipolar disorder<br \/>can be hard to manage at first and people<br \/>who have it, find out, overtime, what works<br \/>and doesn&#8217;t work on management. There many be<br \/>some slip ups. Remember this is not done<br \/>on purpose. <\/p>\n<p>I have never met anyone who had bipolar<br \/>disorder that went out of his\/her way<br \/>to be unstable and cause major problems<br \/>with other people. <\/p>\n<p>So if you have a bipolar supporter setting<br \/>goals, you have to remember what I just said<br \/>if you are feeling bad about where you are in<br \/>your life and how far you have to go to<br \/>get back what all the episodes have caused.<\/p>\n<p>Well I have to run and do a whole lot of work.<br \/>I&#8217;ll catch you tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Your Friend,<\/p>\n<p>Dave<\/p>\n<p>P.S.
