I have to make this<br \/>really quick today because I have<br \/>a bunch of things that I have to<br \/>get ready for concerning an important<br \/>meeting I have tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Today I wanted to talk about <br \/>one question that I get over and<br \/>over and an important sign to look<br \/>out for.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the question that I got<br \/>that started the me thinking<br \/>about this.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hi Dave,<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to ask you a question.<br \/>My husband is newly diagnosed<br \/>with bipolar disorder. First he<br \/>wouldn&#8217;t take his medication.<br \/>But then he said it was because<br \/>he didn&#8217;t understand how to take<br \/>it. Then he started to get better.<br \/>Now it looks like he isn&#8217;t taking<br \/>it again because well he doesn&#8217;t<br \/>look right. How can I know if<br \/>he is taking his medication?&#8221;<br \/>-Mary Anne<\/p>\n<p>I get a lot of questions like this.<br \/>I would like to say a few things.<\/p>\n<p>1. At first, a newly diagnosed<br \/>person might not be super excited<br \/>to take a bunch of pills for a disorder<br \/>that not really explained to them.<\/p>\n<p>I think if you have empathy with a person<br \/>in this situation you can understand<br \/>why someone would be hesitant. I am not<br \/>saying people should take medication<br \/>but I understand why some newly diagnosed<br \/>people are resistant. Especially when<br \/>they are given little information on<br \/>what they have and why it&#8217;s so serious.<\/p>\n<p>2. Sometimes, some bipolar supporters<br \/>don&#8217;t believe that a person with bipolar<br \/>disorder can&#8217;t figure out how to take<br \/>their medication at first. When I first<br \/>looked at all the medications my mom had<br \/>to take at first and at what times, I was<br \/>totally confused. I seriously thought, &#8220;what<br \/>the heck, I can&#8217;t even understand this?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I called the doctor and asked over and<br \/>over for a system to take it and understanding<br \/>what should be taken when. I did it in front<br \/>of my mom and I think she appreciate the fact<br \/>that I was confused and trying to help.<\/p>\n<p>3. Some people look like they are trying to<br \/>avoid taking their medication when they just<br \/>messed up on when to take it. Some you have<br \/>to just judge with patterns. If a person repeatedly<br \/>doesn&#8217;t take any but takes some it&#8217;s probably<br \/>confusion. Work with him\/her to create a system.<\/p>\n<p>Actually in my courses\/systems below, I have<br \/>incredible systems of figuring out how to<br \/>take medications. If you don&#8217;t<br \/>work with the doctor correctly, you or your<br \/>loved one will be in trouble.<\/p>\n<p>I try to post tips on how to do it via email but the reality<br \/>is, the section is written and audio and it&#8217;s a lot so<br \/>look into my courses\/systems OR find someone that<br \/>takes lots of medications and ask them how they do it.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever you can do, just do it.<\/p>\n<p>4. The final point is this. Sometimes bipolar<br \/>supporters fall into the perfection trap<br \/>or the &#8220;they aren&#8217;t getting better fast enough<br \/>trap.&#8221; Notice how Mary Ann is thinking that<br \/>since he isn&#8217;t getting better it&#8217;s probably<br \/>because he isn&#8217;t taking his medication.<\/p>\n<p>The reality is, figuring out what medication<br \/>or medications and how much is an art not a<br \/>science from what doctors tell me. NOTE-I am<br \/>NOT a doctor. So what I have seen, is you can<br \/>go two steps forward but then three steps<br \/>backwards with bipolar stability as you are<br \/>getting the medications right.<\/p>\n<p>Just keep this in mind. <\/p>\n<p>Hey I have to run. Tomorrow I have a super big<br \/>important interview with one of my businesses.<br \/>I have to go to New York City so I have to <br \/>make sure that I get all my meals in early today,<br \/>go to bed early and have a good night&#8217;s rest. <\/p>\n<p>So, with that said, I have to take off for the<br \/>day.
