Hope this day is going well for you.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Well my dad is out of the hospital. His blood pressure is still really high but thinks are looking good. My mom is doing well now as well.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I have had a ton of problems recently. If you read my past few blog posts you know that I have had people have to resign due to PHYSICAL illnesses, my dad, my mom, my friends, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I am going hiking today to relieve SOME of my stress : )<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Okay, I was talking to someone the other day, and this person was complaining about her bipolar disorder.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I asked, “What’s the problem?”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She said, “Everything.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I said, “Do you have alligators in your front yard?”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And she was like, “Huh?”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So I asked again, “Do you have alligators in your front yard?”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She said, “Umm\u2026no. <\/span>Are you ok?”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I said, “Absolutely. <\/span>You just said everything was wrong, so I wanted to see if that was one of your problems.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I asked her numerous questions, all centering around if she had clearly identified her problems and if she was thinking of solutions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She did not.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So she really had no clearly defined problems.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She was just complaining about everything in general.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Guess what?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If you don’ have clearly defined problems, do you know what happens?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Take a guess, and then scroll down for the answer.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

NO CHEATING!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ok. <\/span>Here’s the answer:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You will never have a solution to any of your problems.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If you don’t have a clearly defined problem, you can’t have a clearly defined solution.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It’s that simple. <\/span>Not easy, but simple.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So, it sounds simple enough, but like I said, it’s not easy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So let’s tackle this one step at a time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Obviously, you don’t have alligators in your yard (at least I hope you don’t).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So let’s stick to bipolar disorder.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What if you’re frustrated with your loved one?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now that’s not a clearly defined problem. <\/span><\/span>That’s just a feeling.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Look at it this way —<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Try to get away from feelings, and be more objective.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What’s the REAL problem?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What are you frustrated ABOUT?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Then make a list of the things that frustrate you about your loved one.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For example:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1.<\/span> <\/span>He won’t take his medication.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/span> <\/span>He keeps missing his appointments.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/span> <\/span>He won’t go to his support group.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

4.<\/span> <\/span>He doesn’t listen to me.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

5.<\/span> <\/span>He thinks I’m an idiot.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

6.<\/span> <\/span>He doesn’t help around the house.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

7.<\/span> <\/span>He doesn’t help with the children.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

8.<\/span> <\/span>He feels sorry for himself.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

9.<\/span> <\/span>He won’t go to family functions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

10.<\/span> <\/span>He sleeps too much.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now you’ve got something to work with.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You’ve identified some clear problems.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Not all of them are clear problems, though.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So then eliminate those things you can’t do anything about.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Look at your list again.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Look at #5 (“He thinks I’m an idiot.”)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How do you know he thinks that? <\/span>You’re not a mind reader, you don’t know what he’s thinking. <\/span>This is a feeling, not a real problem. <\/span>If it were a clearly defined problem, there would be a solution to it. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So you eliminate #5.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But look at #4 (“He doesn’t listen to me.”)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This is a clearly defined problem, because it indicates a breakdown in communication. <\/span>Communication is very important in a relationship with your loved one with bipolar disorder.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You may be feeling like they don’t listen to you, but they may feel like they are. <\/span>Still, it means that you aren’t communicating, and that indicates a problem.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Clearly defined problems have clearly defined solutions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So once you have found a clearly defined problem, you look for a solution.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What if you were to sit down with your loved one and say that you feel like they don’t listen to what you have to say?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If you clearly define the problem as they are ignoring you, say that.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If you feel like they don’t turn away from the TV when you talk, say that.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If you feel like they don’t respect your thoughts and opinions, say that.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But be very clear about what you think the problem is.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Remember, the more clearly defined the problem, the better the solution.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now let’s look at #6 (“He won’t help around the house.”)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Clearly defined problem. <\/span>Solution?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Talk to him about it, suggesting that maybe you can divide up the chores.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Are you getting the idea?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now here’s a real important one. <\/span>#1 (“He won’t take his medication.”)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

First of all, and this is a real important point, you can’t make someone do something they don’t want to do.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

However, you can express your feelings to them, and you can do other things.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You can remind them how important it is for them to take their medication in order to get better.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You can tell them you’ve read the statistics (1 out of 5 unmedicated people with bipolar disorder will kill themselves).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You can tell them that you’re worried about them.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You can tell them that you want them to get better.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You can call their doctor, psychiatrist, and\/or therapist and tell them that your loved one isn’t taking their medication.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You see? <\/span>These are solutions to a clearly defined problem.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Then, go back through your list and look for other clearly defined problems. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So first, you make a list of your problems.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Then you eliminate those things that aren’t clearly defined problems.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Take one clearly defined problem at a time and work on solutions for that problem.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When you leave out feelings and get to a clearly defined problem (that is, you think with your head instead of your emotions)\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You can find real solutions to real problems.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
