{"id":2080,"date":"2009-08-06T08:06:59","date_gmt":"2009-08-06T12:06:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bipolarcentral.com\/bipolarsupporterblog\/?p=2080"},"modified":"2009-08-06T08:06:59","modified_gmt":"2009-08-06T12:06:59","slug":"bipolar-disorder-and-alcohol-the-shocking-truth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bipolarsupporter.com\/bipolarsupporterblog\/bipolar-disorder-and-alcohol-the-shocking-truth\/","title":{"rendered":"Bipolar Disorder and Alcohol The Shocking Truth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hi,<\/p>\n<p>I hope you&#8217;re doing ok.<\/p>\n<p>I have had so many people ask me about bipolar disorder and alcohol that I felt that I should write an email about it to address the issues surrounding it.<\/p>\n<p>For one thing, and this is very recent, so you may have read about it in my bipolar news, there was a report that came out that said that impulsivity (like the kind found in bipolar disorder) runs a risk for alcoholism.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, if your loved one already has bipolar disorder, they are already prone to alcoholism.<\/p>\n<p>During a manic episode, there is a tendency to be impulsive.<\/p>\n<p>According to this report, that impulsivity<\/p>\n<p>puts them at a greater risk for alcoholism.<\/p>\n<p>Now, if there was already alcoholism in their family, they are at an even greater risk.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s another issue:<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s sort of like which came first, the chicken or the egg?<\/p>\n<p>Some people, before they were diagnosed, self-medicated their symptoms with alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>Other people drank alcohol before they were diagnosed.<\/p>\n<p>Now they have two problems.<\/p>\n<p>They have bipolar disorder AND they have alcoholism.<\/p>\n<p>But were they alcoholics who later developed bipolar disorder?<\/p>\n<p>Or did they have bipolar disorder and later developed alcoholism?<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the point:<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t really matter!<\/p>\n<p>In medical terms, it&#8217;s called &#8220;comorbidity,&#8221;
