If you are a bipolar supporter,
\nI hope you aren’t making this mistake.<\/p>\n

I was talking to someone yesterday about
\na problem they had.<\/p>\n

They were trying to fit in more time on
\na weekly basis for therapy.<\/p>\n

I asked them why they needed so much
\ntherapy?<\/p>\n

This person said so that I can deal with
\nmy wife. I was like, “huh?”<\/p>\n

This person was going to a therapist 2
\ntimes a week.<\/p>\n

I asked the person to explain his plan
\nto me.<\/p>\n

After like 10 minutes of really not
\nexplaining a plan I said to him
\nthis:<\/p>\n

“So is your plan to make sure that you
\ncan cope and deal with your wife’s behavior
\nuntil she gets better?”<\/p>\n

He said “yes that’s my plan.”<\/p>\n

I asked him, “well what’s your wife doing
\nto get getter.” He said, “well nothing really.”<\/p>\n

I said, “is she taking medication? He said
\nno, she takes it off and on.”<\/p>\n

I said, “well there isn’t enough therapy
\nin the world to help you cope and deal with
\nsomeone who is not stable from bipolar disorder.”<\/p>\n

I went on to explain that instead of spending
\nall his time trying to fix himself or better
\ndeal with getting screamed at, yelled at,
\nthreatened and having a steady stream of
\nabuse each and every day, he needs to
\nset a goal to get his wife to take his
\nmedication.<\/p>\n

He said, “yea that would be great but how.”<\/p>\n

I said to him, “the first step is having
\nthe goal. The first step in accomplishment
\nis to define what you want to accomplish.”<\/p>\n

He said “that makes sense.”<\/p>\n

Does this all make sense to you?<\/p>\n

See how this person was off track and making
\na huge mistake trying to figure out how to
\nbetter deal with a situation which really
\nis not going to magically fix itself?<\/p>\n

See how this person didn’t have a goal
\nof fixing the problem? the problem being
\nthat his wife was not taking medication.<\/p>\n

See how, although something simple, he
\nreally didn’t have a goal to get his wife
\non medication. He had a goal to make himself
\nbetter be able to withstand his wife’s bipolar
\ndisorder.<\/p>\n

Many people are searching for how to
\nbetter cope and deal with the bad parts
\nof bipolar disorder. Now these strategies
\nare important for the SHORT term.<\/p>\n

But over the long term, you have to get
\nyour loved one to take medication.<\/p>\n
