I wonder<br \/>\nif there have ever been studies done about<br \/>\nthe effects of tobacco use or nicotine with<br \/>\nbipolar disorder. My father was a mile<br \/>\nmannered gentleman who was liked and<br \/>\nrespected by most people.<\/p>\n<p>He was a heavy smoker. He quit smoking<br \/>\nabout age 50. Ather he quit smoking, his<br \/>\npersonality changed. He began using a lot<br \/>\nof profanity, he physically attacted to<br \/>\nmailman, and when a local church burned<br \/>\ndown, he tried to take credit for that. I<br \/>\nthought he needed some kind of mental help.<br \/>\nI planned to consult with an attorney.<\/p>\n<p>The day I was going to see an attoryney, I<br \/>\nheard a newscast announcing the the govorner<br \/>\nof the statr (Missouri) had sighned a bill the<br \/>\nprevoius day forbidding involuntary detainment<br \/>\nof persons with a mental disorder. this was in<br \/>\nthe 1970s before people had heard of bipolar<br \/>\ndisorder. the rest of his life, he put me and my<br \/>\nmother through a lot of verbal abuse. My mother<br \/>\nsaid she wished he would start smoking again.<\/p>\n<p>I have heard that nicotine has some effects on<br \/>\nthe brain and may have something to do with<br \/>\ndelaying the onset of alzheimer&#8217;s disease. I<br \/>\nsonder if you have heard of any studies having<br \/>\nto do with bipolar disorder. I would appreciate any<br \/>\nnews about this in your email.<br \/>\nRegards<br \/>\nFred<br \/>\n================================<\/p>\n<p>I have been asked about this before.<\/p>\n<p>Smoking does have an effect on the brain because it affects the dopamine receptors, which are the pleasure centers in your brain.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s what makes it so difficult to quit.<\/p>\n<p>And it can have some effect on medications taken for things like bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why doctors always ask you if you smoke and how much you smoke (and for how long), and because smoking does have an effect on you.<\/p>\n<p>As far as research on studies for bipolar disorder, it&#8217;s best to take an entire day or two to go to a university library. That&#8217;s what I always have to do.<\/p>\n<p>You basically go to a big university and then spend the day researching for the study you are looking for.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s what I recommend in my courses\/studies when you need to do research on bipolar disorder, which you should do when your loved one is first diagnosed and even after, so you can keep up with the latest research on the disorder.<\/p>\n<p>SUPPORTING AN ADULT WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?<br \/>\nVisit:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bipolarsupporter.com\/report11\">http:\/\/www.bipolarsupporter.com\/report11<\/a><\/p>\n<p>SUPPORTING A CHILD\/TEEN WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER?<br \/>\nVisit:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bipolarparenting.com\">http:\/\/www.bipolarparenting.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER?<br \/>\nVisit:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.survivebipolar.net\">http:\/\/www.survivebipolar.net<\/a><br \/>\nI believe there are also studies on bipolar disorder and smoking but I don&#8217;t remember the details.<\/p>\n<p>I do know this, though &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>That several people who I know who quit smoking and had bipolar disorder went into episodes.<\/p>\n<p>Does this mean that you can&#8217;t quit smoking when you have bipolar disorder?<\/p>\n<p>NO.  But if you do, in my opinion, you need a plan if you are going to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Talk to your doctor and therapist. Tell them you want to quit smoking.<\/p>\n<p>Talk with your supporters.<\/p>\n<p>Make a plan with all of them.<\/p>\n<p>Check out all the programs that are for quitting smoking.
