Bipolar Disorder? Sometimes You Have To Do This

Hi,

How’s it going?

Hey, a bunch of people are calling and asking me about a particular person who seems to be attacking me on my bipolar blog.

I don’t think the person is attacking me just stating his position. I completely disagree with his position but I believe in free speech.

Anyway thanks for looking out for me if you are worried.

The thing is, everyone doesn’t have to agree with me and I highly encourage you to take what I say and think about it. Talk about it. Don’t just agree all the time.

When I say stuff, I have thought about it long and hard myself.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know.

I want to tell you a funny story about a friend of mine. He is on a dating site because he is looking for someone to date (obviously).

So anyway, he is telling me that there are no qualified people in his area.

I was like, “That’s impossible.”

He was like, “Yea, it’s true.”

I said, “So tell me what happened?”

Like many people, he said, “Well, that girl was crazy. This girl was mean. That one texted too many messages to me, etc.”

NOTE- It’s so funny how a guy that can’t find a girl to date will say that all women are “crazy.” I often ask them, “Have you considered that the problem could be you?” Anyway, that’s a good way to make people mad so I avoid that these days.

So anyway, he said to me, “You should look at my choices. If I put 10 miles from my zip code there’s nothing.”

I was like, “10 miles?”

He was like, “Yea, I wanted to go 5 but I thought that was too small of a radius.”

I was like, “How about 100 miles then?”

Then my friend goes into a tirade about how that’s too far, he has to work, he doesn’t have time, blah blah blah.

I said, “How about not being lazy and stretching if you are serious.”

Then I said, “You remind me of the people on my list or in my family that would say I can’t find a doctor where we live. There are NONE. You just don’t understand Dave.”

I would find out they wanted a doctor like about 5 minutes from their house.

I once said to my of my family members, “Maybe we can find a doctor in mom’s house somewhere if we look hard enough?” (I don’t know why I said that but it was funny to me.)

You need to take it serious when you’re looking for a doctor for your loved one. That’s one of the most important things I talk about in my courses/systems:

Whether you are looking for a boy/girlfriend or a doctor, you are probably going to have to stretch — expand where you are willing to go.

Why?

Because it’s important, and you need to leave yourself options. You don’t want to have only one option and be stuck with that.

Can you imagine my friend having to be stuck with the first girlfriend he got matched up with just because he only left himself the radius of 5 miles? That would just be silly.

Or my mom picking a doctor only because he lived down the street and not because he was a good doctor?

What if he turned out to be a bad doctor, but she was stuck with him just because she limited her options?

Sometimes you just have to stretch a little bit, leave yourself more options, to get what you need.

It’s just plain the smart thing to do, don’t you think?

  4. Good Morning Dave,

Tell your friend to not be so cynical. Open his mind and heart to what he is truly asking for. Same goes for those looking for Doctors. I had a similar problem but it had to do with my medical. I lost my medical and limited myself to nothing. Fear held me back from going to clinics and asking for help. Well I did it and things are getting better. If he feels he is worth it then the drive, time, or what not will be worth it.

    Thanks for listening,
    Jess

  5. Agree totally with Linda on the availablity of doctors.
There just are ‘None” available her in our city of a quarter of a million.

  6. Dave, I really believe someone like your friend wants reasons to fail and wants others to buy into it and be sympathetic. He is unrealistic, at best, in setting his radius, for sure.
Thank you for the support and all you do for those who have bipolar and those who support.

  7. Good evening Dave,

Your friend is not truely wantin to find someone! He is scared he needs to grow up and realize he is missing out on alot of perfect mates! I could have let my daughter stay with the crazy doctor she was first sent to but since I too have bipolar I demanded a new one and he is wonderful! He has her on the right meds! He wasnt happy that the first one put her on an anti depressant when she new that I new she was bipolar! He actually said “you are right she is bipolar” That made me feel that I have this illness to help me help my child through it! So far so good! We are keeping each other in check wich is great! I teach her what Ive learned in all my years having this illness and it is helping her deal with hers! Thank you for your work putting out your info to help people who are ignorant about it learn !!!!

  8. I am on a on-line dating site right now, and have met one loser so far – he never called after the 3rd date – go figure. I have a blind date with what seems like a VERY rich man tomorrow night. We just “missed” each other last week – like ships passing in the night – he went to 1 parking lot, while I was parked in another – for 1-1/2 hour! I even went to the restaurant where we were supposed to eat – and missed him (he had gone there, too, looking for me!). I felt as if I was “stood up,” but I waited until Thursday to call him and apologize (for what?), and he called Saturday and we set a date for tomorrow at a restaurant we BOTH know!! I’m going to tell him what car I’m driving, the license #, what I’m wearing, etc. If we “miss” each other AGAIN, then I’ll KNOW it wasn’t meant to be…

I am lucky in that the Community Mental Health Clinic is a 5-min drive away. I’ve been with them since 1978, and have no reason to leave. My MAJOR problem now is that I’m losing my therapist in June! We’ve been together since 1970, and I don’t know if I can relate to someone new. I might even have to go to a group – I don’t relate well in group, and they make me NERVOUS, as I pick up on all the “vibes” that seemingly are in the room. I’m empathic that way, and hearing everybody tell their tales of woe just make me sad. But – if that is the ONLY alternative, I guess I’ll have to manage somehow.

The “upping” of my medication helps in the mornings, but I get VERY “nervy” in the early afternoon. Some of it, I’m convinced, is the amount of caffeine I ingest – coffee and tea all day. Wish some of these fruit juices could take their place, but I HAVE to have caffeine, or I’d be a “zombie!”

BIG HUGS to all bipolar survivors and those who love us. May God bless you real good. I pray for my country.

  9. Hi Dave,

I just wanted to say as a sufferer of BPII it is nice to actually know there is actually someone out there who has actual experience with the problem, and the words are not coming out a book.
Anyways, is there any info You could give me on how to effectively explain to my 14 & my 10 yr old that when mummy is bottoming out and crying, not eating, or sleeping with wild mood swings, that it is actually ok.. I really do not want to hide this from them, but at the same time, I do not want to overwhelm them :(..

Again thnks for the wonderful emails.. keep up the good work.. your mum is one lucky lady imho 🙂

  10. Had to laugh at your friend. My husband and I met on line through match.com. It was an hour drive to a small town between us each for our first date, a two hour drive to visit each other at our homes (one way). It was hard at times, but look what we have now.

As far as finding a doctor, our daughter’s current doctor is 10 minutes away. (Five of those minutes is getting out of our driveway) We’ve driven as much as 45 minutes one way for a doctor. Our biggest problem has been insurance. Nothing quite like having to find a new doctor, leaving behind one you were thrilled with because of insurance. That in itself can be a lesson in frustration in the fall. No one, and I mean no one had an opening for 2 months. We thanked God that her old Doctor was kind enough to keep her meds going until we could get a new doctor.

  11. Just to mention, it was 2009 the last I recall writing. I have been doing really well. I found a really good doctor named Dr. Akinnuwum. My meds were corrected and all is good. THIS SITE REALLY HELPs.

  12. Just saying, Halleluya I’m hospital free since 2010. I got the best doctor at Health Quest, Dr. Akinumwum… He saved me from being over dosed from meds that we’re prescribed. Listen to your doctor and do just as they say but listen for sure when your heart talks to your mind. Its a two way recovery, patient and doctor working together.
